Do the tail lights and the brake lights have the same fuse on the 04 maxima? My brake lights are out but the tail lights work.

Check for defective fuse for a start. brake lights on different circuit so shouldn't be affected

Turn signal tail lights and BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its blown brake light bulb. First check and confirm brake light lamp is working and that's not the case.

the bit which the bulb sits in might be faulty, only saying this, because I have had same issue with my car.

TO SIMPLIFY,fuse box-pedal switch-tail light cluster,maybe something inbetween but hardly likely...start with cleaning the contacts for the brake bulbs as they may have verdigris on the brass connectors,then change the switch,then worry.

Check the fuses under the hood, I have had the same problem.

tail lights work on a different filament than the rest of the lights you mentioned, it is possible both bulbs are burned out for that filament. if not, check the fuses as the tail light circuit in some cars is on a seperate fuse. the remaining possibility could be bad socket contacts.

Check fuses, I believe that the WJ's (99-04) ran a separate circuit for bake lights. Not sure if they did same for the ZJ's (93-98)

I had the same problem with my 04 maxima if you check under the plastic by your windshield wiper fluid you will find another fuse box and there you will find the fuse for the back tail lights

most likely you have a short in one of the bulb connectors or the hot wire from them is pinched on medal somewhere. Or you have water intrusion shorting one out. Inspect the bulbs. Leave both bulbs out. install fuse. Press brake pedal several times and hold. Inspect fuse. if its blown its the pedal switch that's bad or a pinched wire from there. If good put one bulb in. Test again,, then the next bulb. If you see something obvious fix it.
