How to Repair a Leaking Car Sunroof Repairing a leaky sunroof usually leads to discovering that the sunroof is not the culprit of the leak. Instead dirt and debris may be the likely culprits since they obstruct the drainage tubes or the drain channel that are part of the sunroof's water management system. Once these are obstructed, the water backs up and heads for the nearest escape, which may be to the interior of your car. The following instructions are to help you repair a leaking car sun roof.

  1. 1)Use a non-abrasive cleaner with a soft cloth to clean the glass panel and the seal on the outside of the car.2)Open the sunroof after opening the vent shade. Allow the sunroof to open to the vent position but do not let it slide backwards.Wipe and clean the trough that is around the opening of the sunroof. 3)Use a wet cloth to remove any debris that may be preventing a tight seal between the trough and the sunroof's seal.Inspect the seal. 4)Look for any cracks in the seal. If you find any, you will need to replace the seal. Contact the car manufacturer or a repair shop to replace the seal.Check the drainage tubes.5) You can use a small cable or even a coat hanger to gently probe around for a few inches to see if there are any clogs or standing water in the tubes.6)Use a thin cable or coat hanger wire again to try to clear the drainage tubes if they are clogged. Make sure whatever you use does not have a sharp end and apply only a little pressure.7)Verify that any of the standing water in the drainage tubes went down by poking a dry thin cable or wire down an inch or and pulling the wire back out.8)Check that the clogs are completely gone in the drainage tubes by pouring a small amount of water into the tubes.

How to Check a Sunroof for Leaks There's nothing nicer than a sunroof in your car, especially on a spring or summer day. Open the sunroof and enjoy the fresh breeze. But check a sunroof carefully for leaks before you buy a used car. It's just good business. 1)Open the sunroof to check for leaks when you are shopping for a used vehicle. First of all, make sure the sunroof opens smoothly and closes securely. A good, snug fit with no cracks or lop-sided setting is a good indication that it won't leak.2)Look carefully around the inside edges of the roof of the car where the sunroof opens. Check a sunroof for leaks by making sure there are no signs of rust or corroded metal around the opening edges. Of course, examine this area while the sunroof is open so that you see all areas on the sunroof opening's edges.3)Check the ceiling inside the vehicle when you check a sunroof for leaks. Look for signs of water stains around the inside ceiling lining of the car at the sunroof's site. Ceiling fabric at the site of the sunroof or around the area of the sunroof that looks spotted or has slight color variations may indicate a sunroof leak.4)See if the car's headliner (the ceiling fabric) is sagging. A leaking sunroof may cause water to run inside the headliner. Water buildup causes the headliner to sag over time.5)Examine the floor of the vehicle carefully when you check a sunroof for leaks. Damp carpet or a mildew smell may indicate a leaking sunroof. Also, look for water stains on seats where water may drip down from the sunroof. This will help. Thanks please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

It's usually not the sunroof that is leaking (or at least not that much.) It's the piece of molding that goes around the doors. Not the weatherstripping, but the molding that is glued against the metal of the roof and A-pillar. That seal breaks down and allows water to just pour into the car. It gets into the headliner and the door seatbelt tracks.

The only way I know of is either to remove the molding and put some fresh sealant in there, or to add a bead of silicone around where the molding meets the paint. Since it's in a highly weathered area and the UV from the sun beats on it, the silicon gives out after a while and needs redone.

It was a horrible design flaw in the Saturn vehicles.

It's the drain tubes on the rear of the sunroof.....using VERY light air pressure, computer cleaner works well, shoot the air down the passages, look for them to drain behind the car, around the rear doors . Good luck.

SOURCE: there is a water leak

Check the A/C condensate drain tube, which is under the glove box, towards the center console, going thru the firewall. If it is plugged, the water in the A/C box will have no place to go & leak onto the floor. This is a common issue, and running the A/C on the "fresh" mode compounds this problem. When the A/C is on, the water removed from the interior is supposed to drain out thru the firewall onto the street.

SOURCE: Renault Clio sport R Reg - leaking manual sunroof

I had the same problem with a 51reg clio expression.
Only way to fix it was to remove the sun roof from the car, clean all the old sealant from the rim, apply new windscreen/sunroof type silicone to the sunroof rim and re-fix.

If you remove the inner trim of the sunroof you can access the 10mm bolts which clamp it to the roof.

Great solution: Use a 8 foot length of weed eater plastic "blade". You can get a small amount from a hardware supply store. While twisting the strand, insert it into your drains that are located in the corners of your open sunroof hole. Feed the plastic thru the tubing... don't force it, use gentle pressure. Test with a bit of water and look under the car for drainage.

SOURCE: 07 Equinox Leaking water at the front corners of

check the adjustment of your sunroof, i work at a dealer and i just had a 2006 equinox in with the same exact problem, if you look at where the glass attaches to the sunroof rails you will see 2 torx screws on each side, with the sunroof closed, loosen the screws a little bit, don't remove them, push the glass up untill its level with the roof and the seal around the glass looks even all the way around where it contacts the roof sheet metal, then tighten down the screws while holding the glass in place. if it continues to leak, remove the sun visors and the clips for the sun visors, i believe they are either philips scres or torx, there will be 2 screws on the visor itself, and 1 for the clip. then remove the front pillar trim panel, you will see a small cover in the upper panel, use a pick or a sharp thin tool to pry the cover off and remove the 7mm screw in there, pull the door weatherstrip off and pull the trim panel off, after you do that gently pull the headliner down in the front corner and peek up at the sunroof frame, make sure the drain ose is still connected, the procedure is the same for both left and right sides. this should definitely clear up your problem!

2003 STS cadillac leaking water on both driver and passenger floor boards

It could be the sun roof. It also could be clogged drains from the sun roof. It may also be door seals Leaking. It could also be leaking around the bottom of the windshield. A good way to narrow it down is to get inside the car and have someone spray the outside of the car with a water hose. while you look for water leaking inside of the car. If it does it while the ac is on may be a clogged ac drain. however it usually just leaks on passenger side when it is that. well good luck.

Water in floor board passenger side of 2001 jeep grand cherokee. Could it be the sun room drain. If so where is it located?

I had the same problem with my jeep. If you aren't positive that it is your sun roof check to make sure that your doors are shutting completely. One way to check is by pouring water along the crack where your door meets the body of your car. My sun roof as well as my drivers side door had a leak in them and instead of getting the sun roof fixed I had sealant put around the rim of the window and I haven't had any problems since.

Rain water leaked thru the inside light of my car Jeep compass 2008 Model.I checked there is no hole on the roof.

Does the vehicle have a sun/moon roof? If so, it is common for the drain tube to become plugged which causes the water to back up into the sun roof module. The water then spills over into the rails that run side to side and leaks into the passenger compartment. The low point of the roof rails being the interior light. Open the sun roof all of the way and look for the drain tube(s). They usually tap into one or more of the corners of the sun roof module and then follow the conture of the vehicle either to the front or rear and drain the water out near the wheelhouse area. You'll need to find some way to disconnect the tubes from the module and flush the debris out. It is usually tiny bits of dust or sand that will flush out quite easily. You have to watch out for a couple of things. Do not drop the tubes as they may fall into the channel of the vehicle, and, use very light water pressure when flushing. There may be other connections in the hose downstream, and you don't want to dislodge those connections.

you have 2 drains in the front that go down the a pillars and dump near the fenders.

The rear usually go down the B pillar or C pillar and out thebottom near the rocker panel.

Blow them out from the top with compressed air and make sure you have air flow at the exits.. Open the roof to see drain holes in the four corners.
