First thing would be to carry it to a good mechanic and have it checked out/inspected. They can give you a good idea of what may be good or worn out on it. Also, the timing belt may be a good thing to consider changing in the near future, ask your mechanic, he can lead you in the right direction. No one on here can tell you what needs to be replaced without inspecting the vehicle first. Hope this helps.
although the picture is of a 6 cly model the location is the same HO2 sensors are mounted in the exhaust system before and after the catalyst HO2..1 is the up stream Before the cat and HO2...2 is down stream of the cat if your code is bank one sensor 1 its the upstream and bank one sensor 2 is the downstream
is motor oil level full and is the motor oil clean not overdue for being changed as dirty oil is thiner than clean oil.the other thing it could be is the valves may need to be adjusted or the valve lifters may be worn out causing the ticking noise.
hi the codes you have given register as the o2 sensor, if the vehicle is running ok then this is what it will be, the other things that the po171 come up with are major faults and the car would run very roughly, and in some cases not at all, the codes are saying you have a short circuit on the wiring for the o2 sensor which normally means the sensor is u/s and needs replacing ...hope this helps
If you want to keep it for another 180000 miles, definetly.....just ensure that it is only head gasket, take for a second opinion, and tell them what you told the first mehanic, dont tell them head gasket, and if they diagnose the same, ask for cost......if close to the first one, go back to him, since he treated you right in the first place.....
Replace the timing belt, and the water pump is there is ANY evidence of leagage. Replace the plugs and the wires. Replace the coolant, the oil and the Auto trans fluid. Replace the air filter. This is the MINIMUM required service.
Replace the ignition coil under the distributor cap. What you have is a hairline crack in it, and, when it is damp, the spark arcs out of the crack to ground, no spark. This is a VERY common problem with older Camrys. Take the coil off, and look at it real closely. You will see black marks on it, from the crack. I am very sure that this will eliminate your problem.
