I own a 1996 volvo 850 gle. the abs light doesn't go off.
Volvo has had a lot of trouble with ABS control units. Yours will most likely need to be replaced. You can either replace it with an exchange unit from a Volvo parts supplier or send yours to BBA reman. in MA for repair.
Testimonial: "Thanks a lot. Will lookout for a replacememt. Though the ABS is not essential I still like to have everything in the car working."

The 850 ABS module was very reliable. It is more than likely the bad crimps under the fusebox that is causing your 1986 850 to have ABS light on. The dealer knows about this and can rectify it for you of get on the forums for someone who has the diagram for fixing.

In your year, there was also the issue of faulty crimps on the wiring loom under the fusebox. Worth googling for a fix. I had to carry out this mod to my own 850 at the time. It ised to casue the pedal to randomly pulse at low speeds.
