How to adjust a torsion bar

Check to see if the torsion bar or mounts are broken. Torsion bar replaces the front springs. May be your problem.

Your 1993 S10 can only be lowered by using drop spindles or lowering springs.

On the end of the bar in the chassis cross member you will see a cast arm and a big bolt and a lock nut . By undoing the lock nut and turning the bolt you apply extra torsion or less torsion on the rod . I f you do not have enough adjustment in the bolt then jack up the front of the vehicle so that there is no load on the bars . Remove any retaining clips and reposition the cast bar on a different spline . The closer to the cross member means extra torsion on the bar when the vehicle is lowered to the floor. and you can increase that load by screwing in the bolt to push the cast arm away from the cross member.. If you want to raise the vehicle then repeat the jacking steps and use a pair of stilsens ( pipe pliers) and twist the bar away from the cross member before replacing the cast part. That puts load on the bar even before lowering it down and so the body will sit higher. ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE USE QUALITY CAR JACKS BEFORE GOING UNDER THE VEHICLE AS THE WORK BEING DONE WILL PULL THE VEHICLE OF THE JACK AND PERSONAL INJURY WILL OCCUR.

Aint much to a torsion bar, it has 2 identicle ends. Both ends are hexigon shaped. And only one adjustable screw, one for each side. Tighten it, and it will raise the front of your vehicle, loosen it, and it lowers the front of your vehicle. All torsion bars are not equal, so a set amount of turns to adjust is not a fix all solution. Mine is 10-1/2 turns from first thread contact, but, you need about a 1/2 inch of clearance from lower arm to lower bump stop. Or to find the Z hieght of your blazer. Measure from the center of your lower arm bolt/pin to the ground (vehicle must be level). then measure from the bottom of the stearing knuckle to the ground. Subtract the two measurements, you want 4.9 inches(4" 7/8"). The higher you turn the torsion bar to raise your front end. the more problems you will have, especially rough riding.

P.S. You can do this adjustment without jacing up the Blazer. But if you have to tighten the adjustment screw, it can be tough. I suggest jacking up one side, Use a jack stand for safety! make an adjustment, then lowewr the vehicle. rock it back and forth to let the suspension settle and measure again. and repeat till all is well.

Torsion Bar Mounts, a broken shock, a bushing in the suspension gone bad.

The torsion bar mounts would sound like metal on metal and directly beneath you when driving. How you describe your problem reminds me of my first mounts that went out, drove me crazy trying to find it.

That is pretty easy. You need to have a front end alignment done at a good shop. If there is something bent or worn out, they will be able to tell.
But it could also be the torsion bar is broken, or the rear adjustment rubber bushing for it is broken.
Is it bottomed out on one side? The torsion bars are instead of coil springs, and they spline into the lower track arm, and run towards the back of the vehicle, where the adjustment bolt is. Adjuster is slightly in front of rear axle.

2x4's do not have tortion bars.

The Jimmy has no strut, they run on torsion bars. The torsion bar mount bushings may have gone bad or broke and needs to be replaced, you can pick up the torsion bar mount bushing at most large auto parts store like Auto Zone and i believe there around $40.00 each and the will have the step by step instructions to get the job done with common tools. The torsion bar mounts are about mid way down the jimmy just about where the drivers and passenger door is under the frame and they are adjustable.

To properly adjust your torsion bars, you need to find your "Z" height.First, park the truck on a level surface and measure the height betweenthe ground and the bottom of the knuckle (next to where the lower balljoint's nut is). This is measurement "A". Then, measure between levelground and the center of the rear most lower control arm bolt. This ismeasurement "B". "B" - "A" = "Z" and "Z" should be between 4.6 inchesand 5.2 inches. We just lifted a 2001 2 dr. blazer 6" with a super-liftkit. All angles and measurements stay in factory specifications andwhen you are done you set the torsion bars to factory specifications. Could also be the steering gear lower bearing or worn worm gear(s). How any miles on this Blazer? Did you try having someone turn the wheel when the truck is running while you are outside listening to where the noise is coming from??? Torsion bars have a rubber bushing(s) that do go bad but you should be able to see wear or cracks or part of the rubber missing.

does it sound like a metallic sound or somthing different
