The brake pads have sensors in them, when the pads get worn down to the sensor the light comes on letting you know its time to replace. this happens well before the pads are completely gone to reduce wear on the rotors. You should have the brakes replaced and the sensor also.
Had the same problem with my '03 330xi. Navigation worked fine but radio and CD did not work at all. I opened the fuse box located in the glove compartment to check the three fuses associated with the navigation system and radio. #7, #39, and #41. All three fuses were intact so I put them back in. I then put the key into the ignition, turned it to position 2 and miraculously the radio came to life. I guess it acted as some type of reset?
