We've replaced the distributor cap and rotor in our 1985 Chevy C10 305 V8 and still have to fire TO the plugs. It won't start

  • Anonymous Mar 11, 2010

OK, I had a typo. We have NO fire to the plugs. Now, is there a way to check the volts without a tester?

  • Anonymous Mar 11, 2010

Sorry, I had a typo. We have NO fire to the plugs. Yes it has fuel. If the firing order wasn't correct would it have ran at all? It was running good, started to town one day, drove about 3 1/2 miles, stopped at a stop light and that was it. Died and hasn't started since.

This is a one piece distributor. It has the coil and pickup sensor all built in. Check and see if you have 12 volts on the large red wire that plugs into the cap while the key is on. (The other wire is for a tachometer if you have one). If you have power and there is no spark from your ignition wires, your pickup module is bad in the distributer. Very rarely have I seen a failed coil.

One more thing, You can force the rotor 180 degrees off. There is a round and square hole when mounting the rotor. It will screw down backwards. Your engine will not start and most of the time, not backfire telling you something is wrong. It just won't start. The rotor should just fall into place if correct.

Did you check to see if you have any fuel?
check the firing order to see if you cross any wire
firing order
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
the number 1 cylinder is the first on left front of engine
the rotor turn clockwise
number one on the cap is the one near cylinder 7

Testimonial: "Haven't had daylight to try the advise, but it all makes sense once it's brought to our attention. Thank you all soooo much!! Will let you know."

txclassicgam may be right, ignition module is mounted in side the distributor going bad all the times.

however, just to check on yourself, make sure you install all the pieces in side that distributor right. make sure the spring and button goes on the cap correct, if this does not make contact to the rotor it won't fire.

I have a Chevy 2500 pick up truck. My son thought he'd replace the spark plugs. He removed the distributor cap, didn't understand it and now the truck won't start. He did not replace any spark...

firing order for 5.7 v8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 mostly all of the chevy v8s are the same firing order. the rotor button in distributer turns clockwise, the cylinder numbers are 1-3-5-7 on drivers side, 2-4-6-8 is on passengers side. To get started get your distrutor cap[new one] look on the top you will see a #1that's where you begin you must know if if rotates clockwise or counter clockwise start in that direction then follow the firing order and cylinder line up. good-day!! if cap is not marked, just pull out #1 plug, put a straw or similar in plug hole on top of piston. turn engine over by crank in front of vehicle with a wrench, when the piston comes to the very top just before it starts going down. this is tdc. and rotor button should be pointing to #1 wire on dist, cap. follow from there. good-day !!

It started without the distributor cap? That is impossible. I suspect you may have plug wires mixed up. Make sure it is wired as the diagram shows. Also replace the rotor. clay58_39.png

Chevy k1500 5.7 v8 wont start

Sounds like your timing is off when you placed the distributor back in or your spark plug wires are crossed. Start with the simple and check the spark plug wire firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Cylinder numbers drivers side 1-3-5-7 radiator to firewall. Cylinder numbers passenger side 2-4-6-8 radiator to firewall. Distributor cap #1 is at 5 O'clock and rotates clock wise. Once that is establish to be good then make sure the cylinder 1 is at TDC with the distributor rotor at the #1 position. Good luck and hope it's a crossed firing order.

I replaced my spark plug wires on my 1996 chevy truck. may have crossed one, need a diagram from the spark plugs to the distributer cap.

Since you didn't state whether it is a V6 or V8, I'll give you both.

V6 -4.3Liter
Firing Order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap, faces the front of the engine.

->Drivers side, spark plug order in engine, starting from the Front going back:
1-3-5
->Passenger side, spark plug order in engine,
starting from the Front going back:
2-4-6

If it's Electronic, the distributor cap has a Left side, (Drivers side), and a Right side, (Passenger side)
Starting from the Front, going back on the Left side,
3-1-5
Starting from the Front going back on the Right side,
2-4-6

V8-5.0, 5.7, and 7.4Liter
Firing Order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Distributor rotor turns Clockwise
Number 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap,
faces Front, towards the Drivers side.

Electronic distributor cap has two sides. Drivers, (Left), side and Passenger, (Right), side.
Starting from Front going back on Drivers side,
1-7-3-5
Starting from Front going back on Passenger side,
8-2-4-6

Spark plug order in engine, starting from Front going back, Drivers side:
1-3-5-7
Spark plug order in engine, starting from Front going back, Passenger side:
2-4-6-8
