I have a 2004 Chevy 1500 Z71 with a factory radio. It is the in dash 6-disk changer with steering controls. I have a intermitten alternator wine coming from the speakers. Sometimes it is fine and sometimes its not very loud but others it really loud. Don't know if my alt is going bad or the radio or a bad speaker. Any Ideas. Thanks

It may be the pre amp in the radio, happened to me in my 03 sierra, it "sometimes" happens because it gets warm/ hot, pretty soon it will cut out all together.

you need to replace the fan resistor located by fan motor if not there then trace red and black power wires to locate resistor behind or under dash it wont be mounted far from fan motor
I am having the same problem with my CD changer in a 2004 Suburban. Have you found a solution yet? Chevy dealership told me that I would have to replace the radio.
Try to disconnnect power to it so it will reset itself then try using a cd cleaning disc in it. If the problem still persists the unit is probably faulty. Cd changers was 90's technology it is time to step up to an MP3 source or music on a usb drive. You can store much more music.

the radio is failed internally, you need a new radio - its possibly jambed and you can remove the top plate on the radio and remove the discs - but it might lock up again
More than likely with a 2003, the speakers that cut out are in the door or doors. Do they cut out of both speakers?
If they cut out of one, then you may have an intermittent speaker ( the wire to the cone becomes partially connected)
If both speakers turn off at the same time and you hear NOTHING on all speakers, then you more than likely have an intermittent connection on the radio itself and probably replacement is probably cheaper than fixing the radio.
One more thing Factory radios sometimes have an amplifier in them. Sounds funny but they call the Radio in the dash the Head Unit and the amplifier is buried in the dash. You could have a bad amplifier or a loose power connection to it, but that is very unlikely.
