Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check all the Vac hoses and reconnect and repair as needed. Too much air in the intake makes the O2 sensor compensate with more fuel, causing the engine to pop and backfire,

First and foremost, and the obvious, check the transmission fluid. After that is noted to be full and in good condition see if there are any codes. Make note of the codes. Your vehicle has universal codes. So they can be decoded. When it does this, can you downshift and keep the vehicle moving. Very broad spectrum of possibilities.

I had
a similar problem with 2 different cars - neither a Santa Fe, but in the first one, the problem was a clogged fuel filter. In the second one (and this is more like your problem), it was one of the coils in the coil pack. Betcha that is it!
