Ford focus 1.8 tdci, is terrible at starting when cold. The motor is slow to pick up speed and doesnt seem to spin fast enough. The glow plugs only stay on for two seconds. However once the engine is hot and restarted, there is a horrible graunching noise

yes well the thermostat housing was leaking and i have fixed the leak. SO i expect the motor is gummed up. However do you know what controls, the timing on the glow plugs? As they only stay on for about two seconds!

ive fitted a new starter motor and the car starts much better. I coud not believe the difference. Ford calibrated the injectors and updated the software. But the starter motor cured it. However the car is not very economical. It doesnt seem to get as much miles to the tank as it did last summer. 60 miles difference to a tank? any idea ?

U should check for a coolant leak just above the starting motor, it makes its way into the motor gumming every thing up ,coolant leak is usually from the thermostat housing.

the glow plugs are controled by a timer relay which is located in the battary junction box

Have same problem am looking at trying head temp sensor as REKON its sending wrong signal, so brain not telling you to wait (GP light staying on longer) and poss different fuel delivery becase cold,
have tested power at plugs an although GP light goes out the relay stayed active so its not the relay in my case anyway

Ford focus tdci not starting and white smoke coming out of the exhaust

It is a clear case of the glow plugs malfunction. It had happened with my neighbor who tried to start his diesel focus one day.
Even jump starting with another battery didn't solve the starting problem.

You could also check the EGR valve for damages and if you want to save a couple of bucks, then go in for used parts for the focus from Good used Focus Stuff
