To locate the inline filter, follow the fuel line back from the throttle body. Inline filters are often mounted to the frame rail underneath the vehicle. It may be necessary to raise and safely support the vehicle using jackstands in order to access the filter.

  1. First, you MUST reduce the pressure in the fuel system; refer to Section 5 for this procedure.
  2. Unfasten the negative battery cable from the battery.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly; refer to the air cleaner filter removal procedure described earlier in this section.
  4. Using an open-end wrench to hold the fuel filter stationary, loosen the bolt for the banjo type connector on top of the fuel filter with a box wrench. Perform the same procedure to the inlet connector on the bottom of the filter.
  5. Remove the bolt or nuts attaching the filter to the bracket and remove it.

Take out the carpet in the cargo area and lift up the floor cover to remove the fuel pump access cover. Unplug the fuel pump harness connector, then start and run the engine until it stalls to reduce the fuel pressure.

To install the new filter, reverse the above procedure. A torque wrench is recommended to tighten the bolts for the fuel line banjo fittings. If the banjo fitting washers are damaged, replace them. Tighten the outlet fitting to 18-25 ft. lbs. (24-34 Nm) and the inlet fitting to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

Reconnect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.

1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 2.0l auto 120,000mi will die and takes 30 - 60 mins to start?

You would need to figure out if you are dealing with a fuel problem or ignition problem to proceed.
Checking the fuel pressure and for spark at the plugs when it will not start is a good place to begin.
Could be a relay or a long list of other things.

1988 MITSUBISHI MIGHTY MAX/S rebuild the carburetor?

Hardly anybody rebuilds carburetors any more. If you can even find a carburetor kit for the thing, there should be an instruction manual included in the rebuild set.

yes you should. use a small brush first and try to clean in behind the throttle plates inside as much as possible. then start the car, it may take a minute but it will start. then rev it up and spray some in the throttle. put a filter on it
