1999 Regal GS stalled this morning on my way into work. I shifted to neutral and it started and ran fine into work. When leaving work, car wouldn't start--engine didn't turn over it just acted like a dead battery. I removed the positive terminal, cleaned it a little and then it did start but it wouldn't shift out of park. I couldn't move the shifter at all. I turned the car off and it would not start again after waiting about 10 minutes. car has 144K miles, has a 3.8L V6 with supercharger and automatic transmission
I have a 1999 buick regal when i start and shift from park the car cut off
My 98 buick regal drives for like 5 to 10 mins then trans stop pulling please help then i turn off car for like 3 mins then it drives no problem why is that it was working fine yesterday ?
So what happened with your car not shifting out of gear.how did you fix it?
I had the same problem ,was it the neutral safety switch for the shifter
So your telling the delearship replaced your ignition switch and fuel pump.
I checked my starter bypassed with a jumper the starter turned over but it would not start because there
was no spark at the plug.I'm thinking it is my ignition switch or a bad wire in that area for my car.I
used ascan tool on it and it gave me error code P0443 and P0449 telling there aslo a problem with ECM purge solenoid.
Well I will be woking tommorow and hope to resolve the issue.
Thx for sharing the info with me

The batt is suspect...take it to autozone, or other place, they'll check it out free......the shifting out of park is a seperate issue, the pawl for the steering/shifter is not working properly....did you notice if the steering wheel would turn when the shifter is stuck?....probably not....when this happens try to turn the wheel back and forth-not hard but not gently- a little graphite dust sprayed in there would help.......hope this helps you out

When the car stalled this morning, the entire dash went out. All of the guages died and so did the dash lights. I shifted it into neutral and it started immediately. I stopped the car completely while still in neutral, carefully shifted into drive and did not have any issue until I went to leave from work tonight. I tried to start the car three times, and I only got the dash cluster to light up. The starter didn't energize. I loosened, cleaned and retightened the terminal and I got it start once but it wouldn't shift out of park. I am replacing the battery tomorrow
I have replaced the battery today but it did not change the symptoms. I have been able to remove the car from park gear by using the "shift-lock" release mechanism on the side of the shifter console. I tried to start the car in neutral and reverse, but it also didn't work--same symptoms.
can be numerous things but based on your info i would beleive problem with your ignition switch along with connection to the alternator. faulty ignition switch will not allow some vehicles to shift in any gear, more info any thing relevant is needed
Did you resolve this problem with your car I had the same thing happen to mine.
Here is the solution:
The fuel pump has been replaced and I have not had the problem. Note: In the failing of the fuel pump, I replaced the battery and the ignition switch. I firmly believe the fuel pump was failing intermittently until it failed completely which is why I burned through an ignition switch (four or more episodes within two days of no-start condition after numerous attempts) and the battery. The battery was four years old so it was almost due anyway.
Ugsteve749, please see my earlier post today. Thansk for e-mailing me. I had the fuel pump replaced at the dealership to the tune of $920. Very expensive I suppose but it is not an easy job from what I am told. By the way, I am about to replace the fuel pump now that I have run the car for another 1000 miles. I haven't noticed any performance issues but it is based on the recommendation of a friend since replacing the fuel pump can disrupt settled debris in the tank. The car has been running very well since I had the pump replaced. I hope your issue is different but if it is, I would continue with the replacement. The car still runs strong and it is operating very well for nearly 150K miles.
taronn1, what do you mean when you trans stopped pulling? I think this means it will stay in one gear and not shift out or perhaps the car doesn't move at all even with the trans in drive and the car revved up. Please clarify. It could be releated to trans filter being dirty, fluid pressure (low, dirty) or a transmission mechanical issue.
