This light means that the computer in the car has sensed a problem with something on the car. You should take the car to a local auto parts store and have them read the codes from the service engine light. Post the codes they give you here and we can help more. Most likely you wont hurt the car by driving it with that light on. Better to ba safe then sorry thought.

    Just so you know Brian ZXR H1 is wrong. A service engine soon light on a ford/mercury vehicle is the same as a check engine light on any other car. It has nothing to do with your oil level in your car. Like I posted before it is a problem that the computer in your car has detected.

It means get it serviced sooner rather than later, But if you check the oil level and it is not to dirty ,then 100 miles would be my limit. Also check the radiator water level

I suggest scanned the ABS module in order to know fault codes stored there. Just with this code number could send you solution details. Could be a probem with the sheel speed sensor misadjust, but will need confitm with the codes finded.

The water pump on the Duratec 30 on the 2001 Mercury Sable is driven by a separate belt on the driver's side of the engine. You can see the belt easily form the top of the engine compartment. The pump is driven by a belt from one of the overhead camshafts in the front bank of cylinders. The diagraom that is provided does not go to the water pump on the 24-valve 3.0 liter in the 2001 Sable.

There are many possibilities. If you can get to an Autozone, Advance autoparts, or Oreilys store they will scan it for free. Once you have a Code number you can get parts for it or shop around for your best price on repairs.

Check your oil level, and water in case that is the cause for the repair light. Make sure you are seeing the check engine light and not an ABS or Brake warning. Shaking with the ABS or Brake light would mean the car should not be driven before inspecting.

Computer has detected a fault--may or may not relate to the work you did. Please get a diagnostic scan of your OBD II connection and report trouble codes back to us. If you are in US, Autozone and Advance, among others, have free scanning service. We need the codes to diagnose.

Mercury sable 2001 duratec engine DOHC I get check engine light and diagnostic code PO401". Any suggestions?
Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.
