Hello mike--- You should not have to remove the hose to drain the radiator. On factory equipment, the bottom corner of the radiator will have a drain valve, open & drain. Hope this helps.
the trans fluid goes in through the dip stick hole, to check, car must be warm and running shift through all the gears then pull dipstick wipe it off put it back in and pull to check, be carefull not to overfill or you could damage it
with it being a 96 i would say the #1 problem for overheating is low fluid that easy just check fluid and add if necessary.the next most common thing is your thermostat bad. which just means to replace it which isnt to hard either. those are gonna your most common problem solvers.
I had this same problem. I kept getting the check steering assist message on the dash of my 2001 licoln continental, and two weeks later my entire tire blew off. The power steering control connector was bad, and when it couldnt go any farther the hoses snapped an the preesure blew the tire off as I was driving. To fix all the damage cost 900 dollars. Maybe you can avoid this by taking it to a shop now. I waited and it could have cost me my life.
