I have trouble with the transmission. My Ford Windstar 1998 has 114 000 km. It seemed to be stuck on the second gear. I had up some 'special transmission oil' very thick and it seemed to help because the first gear now works. I will flush the transmission this week and had new transmission oil and change the filter. Will it solve the problem ? I have done some research on the Internet and it seams that it's a commun problem with the Ford Winstar model.

Buster, check the transmission fluid level, if level OK it is something wrong internal of transmission,torque converter,pump,shaft splines stripped,etc. Take into a good shop for diagnosis and estimate to repair/replace.Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

2003 windstar transmission wont move into any gear

Has the automatic transmission fluid and filter been changed. A flush and change is worth a try.

The switches inside need to be replaced they are hanging up do this now before you ruin the clutches it will go back to normal shifting and work fine change all pressure torque lockup and shift switches diy for about 125.00 with fluid filter cost and back to normal shifting and a happy van and crew make sure vans not running hot burning fluid otherwise will happen again high temp burned fluid damages switches ability to work

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

Check the transmission fluid and make sure it is both at the correct level and that it is not burnt smelling or brown. It should be a reddish color. A fluid flush and transmission filter change may be in order.

transmission probably slipping gears or some of the gears are broke in the transmission

code P0761-
Possible causes - Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty shift solenoid 3 valve
- Shift solenoid 3 valve harness or connectors
- Shift solenoid 3 valve circuit is open or shorted
P0761 FORD Description Shift solenoid valve 3 is turned ON or OFF by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the park/neutral position (PNP) switch, vehicle speed and Engine Control Module (ECM) (throttle opening). Gears will then be shifted to the optimum position. When is the code detected? The P0761 code is detected when the ECM has detected a mechanical fault with the solenoid energized, valve stuck off code O1744- is not a code these are the ones I have found that come close

Sounds to me like it may be a sensor in the transmission. Possibly the shift seleniod or the od sensor itself.
