1988 olds cutlas ciera service engine light comes

1988 olds cutlass ciera service engine light comes on and engine starts to bog down. My mechanic can't seem to get a reading from the computer check. Is he using the right computer dianostic? What’s wrong? I have run three cans of fuel injector cleaner through and it doesn't help. Maybe a vacuum hose? Catalytic converter? Sensor?

Try taking the car to Autozone or similar business for a free scan of your computer (your car is a pre-OBD2 system and your mechanic may have a scanner that reads only post-'96 autos). The scan will usually only point to problem areas, not specific components. That's where the mechanic comes in with specific tests. Good luck!

    Pre-OBDII(2) is called OBDI(1).

Being that old i'd check the EGR valve see if it is plugged up with carbon

Testimonial: "Thanks! No one has suggested that yet."

  • BAD GIRL TOWING Aug 07, 2014

No one has suggested that because it is very unlikely. I know this question is old, but I am working on 1 of these now. can tell you that if 1 fuel injector goes bad, that can cause a no start/run condition

Fuel injector relay location on a 1988 oldsmobile cutlas ciera

There is no fuel injector relay. If your Cutlass Ciera is the TBI version (Throttle Body Injection), the injector is controlled directly by the ECM (Engine Control Module).
