I have a 1996 P38 HSE Range Rover 4.6l on petrol and LPG. It stopped whilst driving and I can't get it started. Had a guy look at it with a diagnostic tool and he said it came up as a crank failure.

the crank/cam sensor will show as a failure if the timing belt. chain has broken
check for that first by removing the oil filler cap and see if the rockers are moving

1996 Honda accord no crank intermittently

cranking is turning the engine over
from you misinterpretation of the term the problem is that it is cranking but not running
if that is correct then yes the cam shaft position sensor may very well be the cause of the not running at times as it controls the ignition and injector operation , the same as the crank shaft position sensor
could be a loose connection that has now come apart or the sensor has finally reached a point of failure that it needs to be replaced

I have a 97 rang rover i plugged in a reader that gave me the code p1177 what is the problem ? the engine is running rough like real bad gass, los of HP from a stop just dragging

The code mean that the engine is running rich, getting to much fuel.

Possible problem is a vacuum hose leak somewhere on the engine. Check vacuum line to brake booster and PVC valve too. Check with a vacuum gauge.

Also problem might be with dirty or defective mass air flow sensor (MAS). This is located on the air intake just after the air filter. Defect MAS would cause the exact symptoms you describe. Check the intake hoses and clamp. New air mass flow sensor cost $75-$95 without housing.

Let me know what you find out and if this helps.

J

Hello I have a 2001 Range Rover it stops after you drive it for about 10 minutes then will not restart until it cools down.I had an issue with the air flow sensor but have replaced this.

Hi it is common on range rovers that the flywheel flex plate cracks or brakes up, this in turn damages the crank sensor causing the engine to stop. I have had more than one car with this same fault.
Remove and inspect crank sensor for damage10 mins job just above the sump on left side of car from underneath.
Thanks rob
