Brake light turns off during braking w/lights on 88 Civic EF 3-door. My passenger side brake light does not work when the lights are on. When head lights are turned off the tail light turns on when braking instead of the brake light causing the passenger side to appear dimmer than the driver side. When the lights are on and when I press the brakes the passenger side tail/brake light goes off completely (no tail light or brake light).
I have replaced the bulb and socket with the same results.
The characteristic you described is almost always a ground connection that is not secure.
Check with an ohm meter the resistance between the ground at the light socket and the chassis of the car. Any resistance is an indication of a poor ground connection. Temporarily connect the return(ground) connection at the socket to the chassis using a jumper.
If all is correct with jumper in place determine poor connection location and repair.
Hope this helps?

check the socket sometimes the prongs in the socket get bent when pulling the bulb out

Check the prones inside the connector that you plug into the brake light module. You may have to squeeze, wiggle, tilt each one to see which one is not connecting all that good. I know it may sound confusing. I tried to explain the best of I could.

Check if you have electrical current at brake light switch. If not go back to checking the fuses and plugs.

Having the sa but haven't replaces the brake switch. The owner's manual for my 99 accord indicates the the fuse is located behind a panel that is viewable when you open the door on the driver's side. There is a panel that you remove (pull off) to expose the fuses. The brake light fuse is the third one from the top on the left. 7.5 A
