I suggest you test the theory by bypassing the relay and/or energising the starter motor manually using a jumper lead, a suitable screwdriver or similar or a remote starter switch.

check voltage going to battery it is most likely low

These vessels have a kill switch with a cord that you have to wear on the arm in case you fall off. I would be looking for a problem with that kill switch

faulty instrament cluster, mine does the same, its a common gm problem, along with the speedometer stepper motors and etc failing. the only fix to repair or replace the unit, you can either go factory from gm, or go aftermarket which looks and works better and you can get various colors and etc from digitaldashsoulutions.com this is where im ordering mine from. hope this helps.

Check the fuse for fuel pump... Alot of volvo have problems with the fuse's

My old 1969 dodge d100 does the same thing. Replace the dimmer switch. It fixed mine. IT gets hot and then shuts down. Try that, Should be cheap.

Your probably right on the intake gaskets. However there is no site that i am aware of that will walk you through getting this project and problem fixed. there is a Haynes chilltons manual on this care that will walk you through the steps on repairing this issue. the book the last i knew was about 17 to 18 dollars.
