I have a friend with this exact car, and they had the same problem - the water pump was literally "gone" - when it was pulled and shown to me, I was amazed at the condition - this was the factory water pump and if you can picture what fan blades look like, imagine the fan without the complete blades - they were completely corroded and the pump was seized up - make sure you drive as little as possibe, as this friend had driven on it with the pump in that condition for months, which in turn caused a blown head gasket as well as several other mechanical problems.

the thermostat can be easily changed from up top, the T-stat is located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose under the flange the hose connects to. Make sure u follow manufacturer's cooling system bleeding procedures when you refill after the T-stat is changed out.
