The car has a sercurity system that is weird. (mine does the same thing) Try and start teh car (it wont start) let it sit for 10 min (until the sercuirty light stops blinking) and turn the key in an off postition for 5 seconds. turn the key in the on postion but DO NOT crank the engine, wait another 10 min (until like stops blinking again) and put the key in off Position for 5 seconds. once again put the key in the on postion but DO NOT crank the engine, wait for light to go off and put key back in the off postion for 5 seconds. Crank the engine and your car should start everytime for a good while.
I am having the same problem. did you figure out what was wrong with yours. I have tested all of the wires in the harness under the dash, they r fine. I pulled off the starter and had it tested; O'rilies said it was fine. It is a 5 speed, and I can push start the car just fine any time. Like yours, some days my car starts, some days it doesn't. The days it starts, it runs fine with no problems starting or running. the problem is the days that it wont start.
Starter solenoid is going bad I think.

this is caused by burnt starter solenoid contacts, U can either replace the starter solenoid contacts (about $15) or u can replace the entire starter.
SOURCE: 98 Saturn sc1 timing chain noise
need to have a shop fix it asap.if the chain breaks or skips timing your entire could possibly need to be replaced.replacing a serpentine belt tensioner is fairly cheap and easy
