Try removing the cable end at the trans and check the gear. They are plastic and sometimes wear out. Also make sure you can turn it by hand. You might have to remove the cluster and make sure you put it in all the way into the cluster.Hope this helps.Good luck.Let me know if you need more help.

That tells me either the cable is not seated properly or it has snapped in two from what you told me here

  • Anonymous Feb 25, 2010

remove the cable and reinspect it. see if the retaining clip was installed correctly also without any looseness

2003 Suburban speedometer doesn't work. Is there an easy fix to this problem or will I need to take it in to an auto repair shop?

Hello, this problem is due to a failing stepper motor. The stepper motor is the motor behind the gauge that controls the movement of the needle. When a stepper motor begins to go out it will cause the gauge needle to stick, skip around, stay at zero or max out on the gauge. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the stepper motor with a new one. While replacing one motor it is best to go ahead and replace them all as the others will go out in time as well. Your cluster will have one motor for each gauge. Here's a link to a page showing exactly how to replace a GM stepper motor and where to get the correct parts to do the job!

Replace spedometer cable 2003 gmc yukon xl

There is no speedometer cable on the 2003 Yukon, if there is no transmission issues like shifting problem. Your instrument cluster has gone bad, to pinpoint. Your stepper motor to your speedometer gauge has failed and needs to be replaced. You can do a search on Ebay for the stepper motor for around $10.00 which is better then the $400.00 cost of another instrument cluster.
There was a TSB on the replacement of the instrument cluster for your Yukon free of charge. The only cost to you is the labor charge unless your willing to do the job your self. Just go to the Gm Dealer and give them this TSB Number: # 07187C: Special Coverage Adjustment - Instrument Panel Cluster Gauge Needle Function - (Mar 20, 2009)

Some customers of all 2003-2004 model year and certain U.S. 2005 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge. Special Coverage Adjustment This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For verified failures between 70,001 miles (110,001 km) and 80,000 miles (130,000 km) on U.S. vehicles, dealers are to provide the customer with an instrument panel cluster (IPC) only. Any additional costs, including labor to replace the instrument panel cluster, will be the responsibility of the customer. Dealers are responsible for the return of the customer's IPC back to the Electronic Service Center

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Speedometer cable how a 1500 gmc siarria

They don't have cables, the speed signal is delivered electronically to the computer then to the instrument cluster. If your gauges aren't reading correctly it's most likely due to failing stepper motors on your cluster's circuit board, very common on all 03-06 GM vehicles. Check out this page to read more about it and see how to get it fixed - Sierra speedometer repair

I think my speedometer cable is disconnected somewhere uderneath my car, because my speedometer is not working at all. where is the speedometer cable located underneath my car?

If your's has one it hooks in the side of the transmission. Most newer cars are electronic. There is a small motor that drives the speedo. After you get the instrument cluster out it is easy to change. Make sure you can buy the motor before you take the cluster out.

Speedometer does not function properly. needle

A faulty vehicle speed sensor will cause this.
It's mounted on the back end of the transmission where the drive shaft slides into, near the top, it's just held in with a bolt, on the right side of the tranny, also has a wire connection.

Speedometer Needle for Hyundai 2004 Accent

If your transmission fluid level is okay, then you need a new speedometer cable. Its not terribly difficult to replace, but it does require you to pull the instrument cluster. A local Hyundai dealership might be willing to photocopy the specific speedometer cable replacement instructions out of the 2004 Accent shop manual.
