******* i had the alternator tested at a local shop (not the usual mechanic) and they stated it was pushing 13amps... said it usually is 16 but that its not horrible... is this right??? On top of that.. the alternator supposedly was replaced less than a year ago.... i have the paper work and all.... It cost close to $800 with labor.... and many repairs since then.. and the car is still giving me troubles... the mechanic from what i have heard has a good reputation ... but could any of this be right???*********
91 Saab 900 keeps dying... jump start it and it will hold a charge for
a few moments then die again.. issue started with right blinker not
working when brakes are applied and lights on dashboard would
illuminate...had it towed to the mechanic about a week ago and they
stated it was the wire that connects the alternator and battery and
replaced this... after charging an arm and a leg for "labor" the
problem still seems to be happening... today the dashboard lights
started to flicker on and off while driving it and to the left of the
steering wheel a noise sort of clicks randomly.... the head lights dim
when this happens.... it died and i was able to jump start it and drive
it cautiously about 20 miles home and when i turned it off ... it would
not start back up.... from the research i have done on this... it seems
like a grounding issue... is this correct??? or what are the other
issues that may be causing this???
Had the same problem on a 1991 saab 900s, check the grounding wire for the alternator. We found that on our car the wire was a skosh too short and was slowly working the copper until it finally broke. We just ran a new ground to the engine case and the car has never run better. Hope this is of some help to you.
If things are clicking, flashing, flickering and dimming at random then you have a short or a grounding issue. Also, if your battery isn't keeping a charge you should have it tested. If it were my vehicle and I just spent $800 on an alternator and labor I would want to see 14amps coming from my battery and alt. combined.
