For a few months now my heat and a/c has been shutting on and off without any switches being touched. But recently the whole unit wont turn on for either the heat or the a/c. But if I leave the unit on for a while and continue driving eventually it might come on. But it has a mind of it's own and the heat will come on and off as it pleases. I have checked all of the fuses and switches they all seem to be fine and have power coming to them. What can this be?
If your saying the blower runs intermittently, I'd start testing at the blower motor when problem is ongoing, if good voltage and ground with no blower action, suspect the blower motor. Did you use a test light to check voltage at fuses, as you can see, one fuse goes hot with the key on, the other fuse is hot all the time. The top wire in diagram for blower motor is voltage, the bottom wire is ground.
Any motor that uses brushes and the brushes are worn badly, the motor may run intermittently.

My diagram is also not there and it's not listed in the owner's manual. I did a search on net and came across this service manual on Ebay. I bought it, arrived in 2 days and it is filled with more information then I will ever use to repair my Jeep. This is a great manual on CD. for $15.00 Here is the link to check it out.

SOURCE: how do you replace a heater core in a 2000 jeep cherokee sport?
the entire air unit under the dash must come out. This requires that you remove the dash board center concle and steering column. Also on some models you must drain the AC system and then requires new Orings from Jeep. Would not do this without experience.

I believe that year had distributorless ignition, instead it uses a form of coil on plug ignition system.
If you open the hood, stand at the front of the vehicle. Look to the left side of the engine, around the bottom of the valve cover (The valve cover is where the oil fill cap is. The oil fill cap is on top of the valve cover), at the bottom of the valve cover on the left side you will see a series of humps. Those series of humps is the coil packs, the coil packs are all in one long piece held down by three or four bolts.
Take out those bolts, gently pry up at the ends of the coil pack and it will eventually come out. You'll see on the bottom side the spark plug boots are attached to the coil pack. After you get the ignition coil pack off, you will see the spark plugs under where the coil pack came from, the boots on the coil pack sit directly on the spark plugs.
SOURCE: The blower doesn't work for heat/defrost
I had a similar problem, except my blower fan did blow, but it ONLY blew out cold air. I took it to a couple of places and I was forced to take it to the dealer. Apparently, this is a problem with the Jeeps. The mechanisms on the door for the blower will break, which opens and lets in ac or heat. In order to get to it, you MUST take the dash completely out. Cost is between $800-$1200!!! Most of the cost is labor ($800)!!! I just got mine repaired about 6 weeks ago. I live in a cold climate and I need the heat for defrosting, etc. it SUCKS!!!
