Cant get serpentine belt on my truck

On my 1994 ford ranger with a 2.3L 4 cylinder, I had to replace the serpentine belt. I had 2-3 inches of slack in the belt and found out I needed a new idler pulley mine was gone. Once I got the new idler pulley I installed it and routed the serpentine belt to the diagram under the hood. I now have the problem of not having enough slack to put the belt over the alternator when the tensioner pulley is pulled back as far as it will go. I called autozone and their system says they sold me the correct parts. Any ideas?

Try putting the belt on the alternator then slide it under the idler pulley last.

No, you've put the belt on incorrectly. Take a good look at the underhood belt routing diagram. If it's missing, get a Chilton's or Motor's manual for the Ranger (public libraries usually have them) and use the belt diagram in th ebook to guide you.

Need to tighten the serpentine belt on a 1994 ford ranger with 2.3L 4 cyl engine

There is an automatic belt tensioner on your vehicle designed to take up any slack.
If you are having problems with the belt slipping the tensioner spring may be weak/seized/worn. Also you may need a new belt if the rubber has gone hard and cracked.
There is also a technical service bulletin on this truck regarding water splashing up on the belt and pulleys. Ford bulletin No. 94-18-8 speaks of installing a splash shield. You will need to see your local Ford shop to get this part.
Hope your repair goes well.

Water pump

A manual will have pictures and everything.
Just replaced mine. Five bolts in bracket holding tension idler, A/C compressor (if applicable) and power steering pump must be removed to access 3 bolts in water pump. Just push aside enough to access remaining bolts. Email at [email protected] if additional info is needed. Also, diagram serpentine belt before removing. Took me at least 15 attempts and 20 minutes to figure out
