Engine managment light flashes (glow plugs light)

If your engine management light is flashing you will need to get your vehicle plugged into a diagnostic system or an OBD2 scanner Soon. This will retrieve engine trouble codes which will give general clues as to where the problem might be. Most Good Auto Electricians can come to you to do this, But, it will cost you money to do it. The refusal to start could be the vehicle going into 'limp mode' a set up where it limits power to help prevent further damage.

You may want to check you fuses. If your fuses are good, check you brake light switch.

If light is on at start up its usually a glow plug gone .Won't make any differance to driving. You should get a diagnostic scan done which will tell you which plug is at fault.

99 vw passat 1.9tdi was driving sound but just died just turns but wont fire up

this means you most likely have a burnt out glow plug or glow plug timer control or both

check it in eobd as well as vw specific what scanner did you use to check for the fault code ? because when that light comes on it has logged a code,it could be anything from a brake light switch to the vains sticking in the turbo

on some diesel engines the glow plugs will cycle after the engine is started. it does sound like your glow plugs are not all working that would cause the hard start and excessive smoke when it does start.

your car went in to limp mode...it sounds like you have got a intermitant fault with the throttle pedal.get the fault read to confirm.you can drive it but it may reoccur...you are doing no damage
