Check out the cars alarm first, a fault in this would cut off the engine,,,and removing the battery lead just resets it every time

Something keeps DRAINING the battery?

If you disconnect the negative battery cable and connect a 12V test light between the battery negative post and the negative battery cable terminal the light will burn if there's a draw. Make sure all electrical consumers are off and all doors closed when doing this draw test. If the light is on start pulling 1 fuse at a time until the light goes out, when it goes out that's the circuit that has the draw. Trace it from there.

Looking for instructions on how to replace headlights on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee; purchased replacement fixtures, but can't figure out how to remove/replace.

Is this the headlight bulb replacement or headlight (assembly) replacement? For bulb replacement:
1. Disconnect negative side of battery.
2. Open hood.
3. Reach behind the neadlight assembly and disconnect the wiring connectors.
4. There is a locking ring around the back of the headlight assembly. Turn this counterclockwise.
5. Gently pull out the bulb.
6. Insert new bulb into the locking ring.
7. Place these back onto back opening and turn clockwise making sure it is flush and totally engaged.
8. Replug wiring connector.
9. Reconnect negative side of battery.
10. LIGHTS!!

1996 jeep cherokee sport starter

disconnect the battery, negative side first.
remove both positive wires from the starter.
remove the bolts from the starter.
install new starter.
make sure positive starter wires are free of corrosion and rust, use sand paper or a file.
tighten positive wires just snug, then another 1/4 turn, ** not too tight or you will snap the stud off the starter solenoid**.
coat wire ends and starter studs with die-electric grease, battery protector, spray paint , or something non metalic.
connect vehice battery, negative side last.

Check engine light stays on and runs rough

1996 is about the year that OBD II, came about. Not sure witch one you have. OBD I, cars could clear codes by removing negative battery post. Problem doesn't always leave. I'd take it to an Auto Zone or Advance Auto where they will scan it for free and tell you what your problem is and of course what part they can sell you.lbreen

Shuts down while driving for a sec. or two

I just had the same problem on my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl. Mine was the Camshaft Position Sensor. Only available at the dealership and cost $85.00 at the parts counter. Easy to install - remove the distributor cap and rotor. Sensor is a flat disc sitting in distributor with wire running to connection at side of engine. Remove the sensor and install the new one in same position. try it you'll like it. If not then go for the Crankshaft position sensor. Go to the auto parts store and also buy a new distributor cap and rotor while you are at it. GOOD LUCK!
