Low voltage at low revs

My 1999 jeep cherokee is only charging low voltage at low revs and my battery is now in poor condition. Sometimes the voltage gets 'stuck' at low voltage even when the revs increase.

Hi this sounds like the alternator is faulty, there is a voltage regulator on or in the alternator to obviously regulate the voltage to the battery , say when lights are on it increases the voltage to the battery to adjust for the flow from the battery, would suggest you either get it checked or replace it...hope this helps

    hi forgot to mention, if you can get hold of a volt meter to test, you should get a reading of.. 13 to 13.5 volts when on idle, or 14 to 14.5 on rev, if lower than this or even higher in somecases, it will need replacing...

Your alternator is on the way out,replace with new or rebuilt. you can remove alternator and have it bench tested to be sure.

1999 cougar voltage regulator needs checked how do I do this

Put a multimeter on dc. Place the probes on the battery terminals. You should see between 13.2 and 14.8 volts with the engine running. Do this at idle and while you rev the engine too be sure the voltage regulator is not under or over charging the battery

Alt gauge reads low

This sounds like the alt is not charging, but a eak battery will also cause this condition, what you can do is have the charging system tested. if you have a volt meter you can connect it to the battery with engine running and acc off you should have 13.5-15 volts,this is a good alternator, then turn on all acc and check it, it may have a low reading but should atleast go to 13volts and then when you rev it up it should go to 13.5 - 14.7. if the readings are low replace alternator.

I changed the baterry on my previously running cherokee and now wont even turn over

Hard to say exactly with out checking myself;

Wrong (to low amps) battery, poor condition of battery clamps, loose cables going from battery to starter assembly, battery installed in reverse polarity. Perhaps the NEW battery need to be charged ( storing a battery on concrete (cement) slab will cause a drainage of the battery and it doesnt take long)

Car had a low battery when I Try staring this morning after a booster car start but then it shut off

is the alternator charging? What kind of voltage reading are you getting when engine is running? If alternator is not charging, your vehicle relies on battery to stay running, after battery runs to low, it will stall.Continuing this may result in replacing battery also. Have a load test performed on battery before replacing.
