I think it's time to replace the battery. have you tried to crank it after someone gave you a jump? if it starts than replace the battery. there's no real way I can tell you how to check the charging system unless the car is running.

If you have a Multi-Meter, you can easily check the cars charging system. Make sure the switch on the Multi-Meter is on 20V, and check the voltage of the battery. It should read at least 12 V for it to be a good battery. As for your charging system, you will need the car running. When it is running, do the same thing, and see what voltage you get from your battery. If your charging system is working correctly, It should read a little higher then your original reading due to the alternator re-charging the battery.

2004 Pontiac grand prix gtp won't start- fully

You need a new starter solenoid. It is essentially a heavy duty remote switch that is activated by your ignition key switch. The solenoids get stuck or don't conduct well after 6 to10 years.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8 supercharge, Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E rebuilt 2 years ago. Drove to work (26 miles) and all was fine, got in to leave and put gear selector in drive or 1st and nothing...

Your transmission for the GTP should be the 4T65-HD. If in fact it is not then that could very well be the problem. The 4T65-E is for the other 3.8L naturally aspirated models.

Have a 98 gtp it was running fine last night sent the kids out to start it in the morning it started but stalled and we didnt notice it wasnt running for 10 minutes tried to start it and now it wont start...

Did you read the voltage across the battery terminals? You need at least 12.50 v and the battery has to take a charge. The term have to be clean and tight. Sounds like a dead battery or poor ground somewhere.

My 1998 grand prix gtp cut off today while driving it. car still has power battery is not dead. alternator still good and the car will not start. it will turn over but wont quite fire up

my 1998 grand prix does the exact same thing. It just shuts off while driving. I still have battery power. I have called pontiac dealers in my area and they dont seem to have any idea to fixing without changing everything in hopes the hit the problem
Can you narrow it down.

1999 Grand Prix GTP. Catalytic convertor fine.

Make sure it always gets premium fuel...even with premium and especially in warmer weather the GTP will frequently perform the factory programmed KR (knock ******.) In WOT it is also more susceptible to running a lean condition with stock programming.
Things you can do to troubleshoot the problem and give more consistant performance with the GTP is run colder range copper core plugs and/or any brand of cold air intake, or even a stand alone 9" open element cone filter. Both are better than stock and provide more airflow even though the stock airbox was redesigned in '99. What else you can do is not limited to that but a start. Good luck.

Key stays in ignition

if the key won't turn all the way off...it's probably a bad lock cylinder.
