Have you tried replacing the speed sensor? Also is your car a column shift or floor shifter? If it is a column shifter make sure to inspect your linkage between the shifter and the tranny.

My 2000 mercury sable won't shift just had transmission fluid changed. Rpm gauge bounces and it won't shift please help this is my families only vehicle

Check the
Vehicle Speed Sensor The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (Figure 43) is a variable reluctance or Hall-effect sensor that generates a waveform with a frequency that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. If the vehicle is moving at a relatively low velocity, the sensor produces a signal with a low frequency. As the vehicle velocity increases, the sensor generates a signal with a higher frequency. The PCM uses the frequency signal generated by the VSS (and other inputs) to control such parameters as fuel injection, ignition control, transmission/transaxle shift scheduling and torque converter clutch scheduling. That same VSS signal is use for the tachometer as well !

My transmision slips and the speedo quits working at the same time in my 1998 mercury sable

Hello wsarah03,

There is a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) mounted on the transaxle, that is a good place to start. The VSS tells the powertrain management system when and how to shift the transmission and also gives the speedometer it's signal.

From your description that the speedometer quit working at the same time I would suspect the a faulty VSS.

Well i have a 99 couger and i had to replace the pcm so took it to ford dealer had the car re programed so it would start now when i put it in drive it takes off in high and want shift up or down and speed...

most likely you need to replace the speedometer sensor..it control the transmission shifter by sending the signal to the pcm and the pcm to transmission shift solenoid..that why it don't shift right

1995 sable cruise control quits, speedometer works fine as does engine,, etc, just no cruise control anymore. Any suggestions.

Check the brake switch. There are two, one for the cruise and the tcc, and one for the brake lights and shift interlock

99 Mercury sable speedo/tranny

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Please rate this a fixya if you find this advice helpful, Thanks Randy

1996 mercury sable speed hand and drives in strain and ****

I hace a 19196 sable-the problem is the transaxle speed sensor-this part sends all speed info to the computer ..-First symptom(speedometer stops working and then transmission shifts erratacially and power steering becomes hard and engine light comes on..The computer on this all eletronic car cannot send proper signals to the speedo-trans-power steering and other functions without knowing how fast or slow the car is going..Have the SPEED SENSOR mounted on top of the tranaxle replaced and all will be well.Part is not to expensive.labor can vary depending whether you have 3.0OHV or DOHC engine-some cars have to have exhaust dropped to get at it-Good Luck All
