001 audi a4 1.8T quattro has had an itermittent oil burning smell (cabin and external) and as of recently I have noticed an occasional antifreeze odor as well. There is 77k on the car. The valve cover had a very slight leak and was tightened down with no signs of further leakage. The oil and coolant levels seem to be fine. Oh - and I have noticed on 2 separate occasions within the last 2 months while stopped at a light, that the exhaust appears to be heavier than usual. The later occurence was simulataneous with the smell of burning oil. Since temps are frigid here (upstate NY) i wrote off the exhaust cloud to cold weather...however, I am concerned that may not be the case. Any ideas??

Hi tina
it might be a few things unfortunatly, 77k is not much for these cars but allot can go wrong with them, i can start with, valve guid seals these tend to wear arround 100,000 but deppends on use, wether hard driving or town, so you could be getting close to these, you can also check visually if there is another leak from the valve cover on the rear side or this might just be ressidue from the previouse leak, sometimes the smell of unburnt fuel can fill the car if the wind is blowing in opposite direction when standing still can fill the cab with fumes dont worry only minor, it possibly is the cold air rather than smoke condensation from the exhaust is warm and hitting cold air will do that, it dosent realy sound drastic and just keep an eye on the fluid levels as you are doing but i dont think there is much to be concerned about....hope this helps

.Dear's I have Audi A6 2.6L

These cars leak! Regular services can usually find and fix these leaks as they happen. Valve cover gaskets and cam Phasers are one big one that drips on the exhaust manifld and stinks up your car. Oil sending units and oil coolers are big on these cars also.Good Luck.

My 2002 montero was smoking really bad (white smoke) it smelled like burning plastic. I took it home and let it sit for 1/2 hour. I started it and the smoke faded away, but when i accelerate to take off it...

HAVE YOU NOTICED COOLANT LOSS,RECENTLY?KEEP THE COOLANT LEVELS FULL,CHECK TO SEE FOR ANY LOSS AT ALL! OIL SMOKE IS MORE BLUE THAN WHITE,BUT FUEL CAN HAVE A LIGHT BLUE SMOKE.Antifreez more whitesh with a similar smell of antifreeze.

My audi v8 quattro 1990 will not hold it's antifreeze.. looks like it got really hot where center hose burned a small hole... it was patched but i have not put new antifreeze in it yet..any suggestions to...

Well one you cant "patch" a radiator hose, especially one under high pressure with quite a few bends on the V8 Q's. (I assume you are referring to the upper hose). First replace the hose, which will be more expensive than a Granada's :). Then I, Not saying you should do this, but again I would experiment with water instead of expensive antifreeze, at least checking for leaks. You probably don't want to bring it to 100% operating temp however as water has a lower boiling point than antifreeze. Ok let me just ******* and move on.
YOU fill with at least 50% antifreeze when car is cold (more if the outside ambient temperature says you should). Start your Audi with the fresh fluid. Let her run for a while why you watch the temp. gauge on the left. Should stay right below 100 (center marker), possibly a tad over. Do not let it overheat. (this is assuming your gauge is working, and your temp sending units (3) and auxiliary fan are functioning. Look for leaks. Step behind the car and get your nose close to the exhaust. Does it smell like sweet antifreeze? Do you see white smoke? If neither head gasket is probably good although leak could be finding another outlet. Usually not with the v8Q's. Is your thermostat opening? Check and see if you have heat? if no heat then your coolant isn't circulating properly = bad thermostat, filthy radiator and coolant system needs major flushing or possibly worse your heater core is gone, which would indicate constant fogging on the inside of windshield noticeable when the defrost is put on and smell of antifreeze in the cabin. This would also explain a not so obvious loss of antifreeze. If indeed your heater core...sorry ...not fun on this car. Not fun at all. Good luck.

Im having problems with my audi a6 turbo Quattro, it is smoking out of the passenger side tail pipe and you can smell a burning smell

If its blue smoke then your valve stem seals are worn and that is allowing oil to enter the cylinders and burning with the gas.
