timing belts do no use a hydraulic tensioner, that is only used on engines with internal oil lubricated timing chains.

all marks need to be aligned to 12 o'clock driver cam should align with notch in cover,crank sprocket also at 12 o'clock there is a straight line on reluctor of crank gear ,this line matches a notch on the oil pump where the crank sensor fits,right cam at 12 line should match camcase where it meets cylinder head

Want to know what maintenance is needed for 2001 Subaru Outback for 120,000 miles.

timing belt needs to be replaced at 100,000 miles, auto transmission fluid and filter replaced, that is really the only things, of course u check all fluid levels, the big maint is the 100,000 mile service

I have a Subaru 2001 2.5L SHO and when aligning all timing marks the engine seem to not want to rotate....feals like it might be toughting piston to valves.

it sounds like your crank timing is 180 degrees out you need to take the belt off and turn the crank 180 and realine timing marks then refit the belt hope that helps
