98 taurus trouble idling

I have a 98 Ford Taurus SE. When I start the car it usually revs up to around 3000 rpms ,then dies back down to the typical 1000 rpms after a few seconds. If I leave it idling for long it stalls out in any gear. Which is not too handy at busy intersections. However if i mantain giving it gas it wont stall out. The service engine soon light has been on for sometime, so i went to autozone and got the codes checked. The O2 sensor and Mass Airflow Sensor codes were both triggered. I have talked to a few people and they all say that it is usually one or the other that needs to be replaced and not both. Is there any other issue it could be in addition to those or which one should i try replacing first, my instinct says the mass airflow sensor but i wanted someone elses opinion before i go buy one.

I would replace the maf sensor first. It is cheaper. It controls the air fuel mixture for your car and sends this signal to your pcm.It is probably not getting enough gas to idol your car.

You need to clean the IAC again and also the throttle valve and bore, use only CRC brand Throttle body cleaner. After they are thoroughly cleaned disconnect the battery for 5 min's and then drive the car in varying condition for a few days. If that doesn't cure the issue you have more serious problems and will need a scan tool to look into the readings from the MAF, TPS and ECT sensors. High idle cold start is normal then slowly dropping after a few minutes. I assume you never had a check engine light. Correct?

Where is the coolant bleeder on a 98 taurus 3.0engine

When you do the above thing, you'l need to maybe top up the coolant when the thermostat opens,so watch out for the coolant level to get low.
A weak water pump will make it hard to bleed the air thru the heater, but revving the engine to 3000 rpms usually gets the fluid mov ing. don-ohio (:^)

Without more info I would guess your Idle air control motor (iac) is going out - this component can be quickly tested at your local mechanic shop without much hassle. Hope this helps!

it sounds like the fuel pump is going out, and it sounds like the switch in the door is sticking. you can try to spray a contact cleaner, this may help, but I am sure if you bought a new switch it would fix the problem. Hope this helped tim
