Inside the car air cleaner filter, where are they located and how do you replace it?

Could have a vacuum leak , Is the check ENG. light on ? Could need spark plugs, plug wires ,distributor cap . The IAC motors ,idle air control motor passage could be plugged with carbon. Bad mass air flow sensor could do it. Check for critter nests , found that cars that sit for a while , squires and rodents like to make nests under the hood . I have found air boxes full of dog & cat food. They take insulation and make nests. Check the Air Cleaner Restriction Indicator
The air cleaner restriction indicator is located on the intake duct between the air cleaner assembly and the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
If the area inside of the clear section is green, no air filter service is required. If the area inside the clear section is orange and Change Air Filter appears, replace the air filter.

The cabin filter is not the same filter as the air filter. The cabin filter is for the heating and air conditioner inside the car. The air filter is for the engine.

It's located underneath the air filter on the frame, remove the upper air filter housing you will se three bolts inside remove them and remove the bottom of the air cleaner housing, then you can see the fuel filter, you can get an aftermarket filter but I recommend the original replacement from the dealer

Air Cleaner Element -- Explorer 4.0L and 5.0L



Removal
1. Release the air cleaner clamp and position the LH side of the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) and air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) out of the way.

2. CAUTION: Do not tamper with the sensing elements located in the mass air bypass of the mass airflow sensor.

Remove the air cleaner element from the RH side of the engine air cleaner.

Installation
1. Clean all inside surfaces ofengine air cleaner. Refer to «Cleaning and Inspection» in this section.

2. Install air cleaner element.

3. Position engine air cleaner halves together and close the air cleaner clamp.

Six cylinder:
The air cleaner element is inside the air cleaner housing on the left side of the engine compartment. (It has a large hose connected to it).

To replace it: Disconnect the hose from the air cleaner housing cover with flat-tipped screwdriver.

Loosen the four bolts, and remove the air cleaner housing cover.

Remove the old air cleaner element.

Carefully clean the inside of the air cleaner housing with a damp rag.

Place the new air cleaner element in the air cleaner housing.

Reinstall the air cleaner housing cover, and tighten the four bolts.

Connect the hose to the air cleaner housing cover with a flat-tipped screwdriver.

follow the air intake hose from the engine, it leads to the air cleaner box, inside that is the filter element, if u ca't find an air cleaner then just go to any auto parts store and they will be glad to point out the air cleaner box and sell you the part.

It inside the black box, follow air tube from intake on top of motor to black box with filter. Box should have snaps or clamp to open up, then take out filter and replace.

Open up latches on air cleaner box. Notice how filter is set inside. Replace filter, close lid and latches.

Standing from the front of vehicle look in the engine compartment, on the right side of engine and behind the batterry. There is a black box with a 3" flexible hose hook to it, pop up 4 clips and remove the cover then you see the air filter inside.
