This happened to me once as a result of moisture shorting a fuse. Once the fuse was replaced the gear shift switched just fine.

This is probably too late, but I had this problem with my Disco and it was a brake sensor located behind the brake pedal. If the sensor breaks and the car doesn't know that the brake is pressed, it will not let you put it in gear. You can reach up behind the brake pedal and work the switch and it might let you put the car in gear but you are going to have to replave the switch.

Take it to a workshop that either can repair automatic transmissions or manual transmissions, i dont know hich because you dont say what type of gearbox you have. If its a manual, then is the clutch faulty ? if its automatic then do you have any oil in the gearbox ?

Hi, My 02 Range Rover has a warnig light showing trans safe mode. I put it into low range with no problem drove for a couple of miles and tried to put it back into high, with no joy. It is driving ok and...

these rovers are made like a big computer...if theres is anything wrong with the transmission it will put itself into "safe mode" so it wont rev high and basically you cant go very fast. so you could have a stripped gear, low fluid, or even the gears could be too close or too far apart.

When i put in gear makes loud bang more so when car warm it sounds more like front diff than gear box area( common ) land rover discovery 95

Gear clunking is normal in the Rover's transfer case. It uses straight cut gears - they are stronger, but louder. If not out of the T-Case, check the front driveshaft - another common wear point.

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? If the level is ok, you need to get the transmission checked out. Does reverse or any other gear work?
