The heater in my 2001 Aurora whistles more and more loudly. Turn off the heater - whistle goes away. It is still working, but has become annoying. How do I get at it? Also, is this vacuum or heater core related?

I don't think its related to vacuum or heater core (unless the heater core is leaking coolant - this would be noticeable as steam & coolant loss to the vehicle interior).
First, try to ascertain if the whistle is directly related to fan motor rotation - if so:-
A likely cause is dry bearings on the heater blower motor, but a similar whistle can be caused by debris such as a leaves/twigs fouling the fan airflow or drum.

If the bearings are dry, it is generally not easy to access the bearings to replace or lubricate.

Sometimes a small hole can be carefully drilled adjacent to the motor bearing mounts, allowing a lubricant such as WD40/penetrene to be applied to the bearing area.
Good luck.

Sounds like air is shooting out when accelerating. Could this be an exhaust leak? Plugs, coils, hoses seem fine. Noise is coming from passenger side under engine sounds like.

yes could very well be an exhaust leak.but that should be kinda loud and annoying..also u could have a slight whistling sound coming from ur air intake hose coming from air cleaner box to ur intake or throttle body or ur air inlet goin to the motor. when the motor is accelerated it would produce a high pitch sound like a whistling .hope this can help

Whistling from engine

This is a symptom of the inlet manifold gasket having a leak. The whistling is air going in through the small leak/hole in the gasket. With the throttle butterfly shut, air is getting sucked in the only way it can.Try tightening the inlet manifold bolts 1st.But more than likely the gasket needs replacing.Hope this helps

Whistling can not find any vacuum leaks if you accelerate the whistling goes away

Sounds silly, but you can easily trace the source of the noise by taking a short piece of garden or heater hose, putting one end to your ear and using the opposite end as a probe. It works like a directional microphone and will lead you right to the noise source!! At higher rpm's the noise likely does not go away, but becomes hypersonic and beyond your hearing range.
