You will need to check the transmission fluid. There is a dip stick for the trans just under your breather box on the driver side of the car. Start your car and let it warm up before checking the trans fluid. It should show on the stick. It should be the upper mark on the stick. If it is touching it then the fluid is ok and if not you will need to add some fluid.

Check the auto fluid level when cold. The level increase when warm. with any luck its just low fluid.

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you replace the automatic transmission fluid. If the fluid is burnt, the car hesitates specially on cold start ups. Once replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable.

Check fluid level, check vacume line to shift modulater on trans if there is an air leak it wont shift right if theres fluid in the line the modualator is bad .Change fluid and filter ad lucus trans treatment.

A common problem with Mazdas, it's a sign that the transmission is worn out. There is a seal on a hydraulic system that activates the clutch for Drive. When this seal wears out, it leaks and it takes longer for the clutch to engage. The only way to repair it is to take the transmission apart. You may be told to try flushing the the transmission, chances are this won't work. The seal needs to be replaced.

yes this is a defective trans, u either have a worn out direct clutch or a hydraulic leak inside the trans, u can try changing the fluid and filter it may help, if not you will need to replace the trans.

Many modern vehicles will delay the shift position to allow rpms to increase, thus warming the engine up faster. As soon as the engine temp reaches the desired level, the transmission shift point resorts to the normal point.

This is an emissions issue, with the idea that a warm engine puts out lower emissions. This is also why when getting an emissions inspection in states that require it, they want the engine warmed up first.

At 24K miles, I would be hesitant to say the transmission fluid and filter need to be changed, but if it seems extremely noticable and objectionable, that would be the step I would take. Cold fluid is more viscuos, harder to push thru a clogged filter than a clean one. However, unless you've been towing a trailer a good bit, your mileage should be low enough that filter should not be an issue.

Is it manual or auto trans? If manual the gear lube is thicker when cold and the syncronizers tend to stick and not slide free for grind free shifting or for locking into gear.
If Auto trans if the jeep is warmed up setting then cycle the gears before driving. If that helps then the fluid is not getting through the valve body properly. It could be metal in the body or filter or cold seals are letting fluid by til the seals warm, expand and hold pressure. I'm assuming trans fluid is good, not old. One item that can lead to poor cold shift in an auto trans is a bad torque convertor. Since it seems to be a second gear issue the second section of the trans could have a bad seal. In an auto trans I'd take to a shop and have a cold pressure test done. They will tell which one is the problem.
