Your best bet shy of going to get any other available key is to call "Pop-a-Lock" or something like that. I say that as the damage that can be caused by springing the door trying to get in can be much more expensive. Not to mention the frustration.

Second is to find a friend with a "slim jim" (this is a thin flat piece of metal with cuts made in it so that it can be slid down into the door & hook onto the door linkage & pop the lock by pulling up once hooking it) but even that can damage the linkage or connectors within the door.

But, if you must try yourself, (I have-see needless note below) you may be able to unlock the doors. I've used a coathanger, bent it so that when I stuck it through the edge of the door near the top of the window by prying out cautiously, I was able to get the wire to pry the lock to the Unlock position & open the door. I had to get lucky & it took several attempts to get the hanger bent to where it would "grab". I used flat tip screwdrivers for my wedges.

I also cracked my windshield on that car first as I tried to use the stainless antenna mast which popped off of the lock switch & cracked the windshield-use caution. I then went & got my coathanger.

If that doesn't work, the coathanger can be used as a "slim jim type device, slid between the glass and the weather strip (rubber) with a "J" bend so that you can hopefully grab the bar (similar to the slim jim) that goes to the lock & pull enough on it to use the flex in it to open the lock.

In either instance, it will help if you use something to wedge between the area where you are to insert the hanger. I doubled the hanger when I made the "J" hook for extra strength, the J is small at the end to catch, that's all. There is a bar that runs between the lock switch to the lock on the door & that's what you're trying to hook. You can also try & hook a manual window knob & work it to open the window slowly.

Good luck

Big Hammer!! Just kidding. If you dont have or know how to use a slim jim, then get a wedge shaped object(door stop, needle nose pliers, etc) and gently work it in between the top of the door frame and the body of the car until you have enough room to wiggle a coat hanger or bent antenna thru the crack and try and snag a door handle or push the unlock button. If you dont feel safe doing so, sometimes the local police or fire dept will help you, but be prepared to prove ownership of the vehicle once doors are open.

Just another"needless note". The people that come out when you call roadside assistance use an inflatable device they slide in between the door and the car and when it inflates it bends the door open so that they can snag the lock with a piece of tempered wire.Which caused more damage to my car than just using a door stopper ever did. Now I have a nice whistle thru the door seal. Most of the newer cars have metal plates surrounding the locking mechanisms and rods that go to them so that you cannot get them with a coat hanger slid down between the window and window seal. It just depends on the car. Good luck.

Have a 1993 accord only key i have is ign. what does key for back seat release and shift lock and gas lock look like ?

The door lock key is the one that's used for all the locks you mentioned. If your ignition key does not work on all the locks, maybe someone, somewhere along the life of your car changed the ignition cylinder and never gave you the original key for the car, which would have operated all the vehicle's locks. Also, any one of those keys can be used to unlock the shift lock since once a key is inserted fully all the way down in there, the shift lock is released.

Ignition tumbler locked up. Key still works well in doors. Steering wheel is not locking, but key wont turn

try a spare key, or push key into lock while turning
it is the tip [pointy end] of the key that releases the switch tumbler lock allowing it to turn. keys & switches wear out, a 'heavy' key ring especially wears the switch.

2000 contour

for 98 contour issue. TSB 98-21-14 not covered by warranty

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04. NOTE: KEYS INCLUDED WITH NEW IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE CUT FOR THE IGNITION ONLY. IN ORDER FOR THE KEYS TO FUNCTION IN THE DOOR LOCKS, THE KEYS MUST BE CUT TO THE DOOR CODE OF THE ORIGINAL LOCKSET. THE KEY CODE WILL CHANGE UPON INSTALLATION OF THE REPLACEMENT LOCK CYLINDER (FIGURE 1).

    tw2114~us~en~file=tb5525a.gif~gen~ref.gif
    Figure 1 - Article 98-21-14

NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER TO DISCARD ALL KEYS THAT WERE CUT TO THE ORIGINAL IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER.
  6. Record the new key code on the repair order and provide to the customer. Advise the customer to record the new key code in a permanent location and to discard all references to the original key code. NOTE: REPLACEMENT IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE SHIPPED WITH NON-PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) KEYS. IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH PATS, OBTAIN TWO (2) ROTUNDA KEY BLANKS (OR OTHER FORD AUTHORIZED BLANKS, SUCH AS: ILCO, STRATTEC, CURTIS, HUF, OR VALEO) AND CUT TO THE REVISED KEY CODE. USE OF OTHER UNAUTHORIZED KEYS MAY CAUSE ERRATIC OPERATION OF THE PATS SYSTEM.
  7. Program PATS keys using one of the two following methods:
(1) For vehicles with Integrated PATS (IPATS), function built into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and built beginning:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City (Contour/Mystique)
  • 2/16/98 Mexico (Contour/Mystique)
  • All 1999 Cougars
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 3.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PCM
    • Enter Security Access (10 minute delay)
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase
  2. Disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Cycle the first non-programmed key in the ignition to run position for at least 3 seconds and then turn to the off position.
  4. Cycle the second non-programmed key in the ignition to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 3 seconds.
  5. Verify the vehicle will now start using both keys.
(2) For Contours/Mystiques with Stand Alone PATS and built before:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City
  • 2/16/98 Mexico
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 1.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PATS
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase (this process may take up to 8 minutes to complete )
  2. Disconnect DLC.
  3. Cycle first unprogrammed key in the ignition to run position. First key will program and allow vehicle to start.
  4. Again cycle first programmed key to run position. Within 15 seconds, remove original key and turn new unprogrammed key to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 2 seconds. New key will start vehicle.
  5. Repeat this process for additional key programming. NOTE: THE FOLLOWING SHOULD BE NOTED FOR THE PART NUMBER BLOCK:
    • Part Number suffix will match center character in key code
    • Logo on key is Ford for Contour models
    • Logo on key is Mercury for Mystique and Cougar models

Program a remote key for 03 A6

I have an A4 and did this to re-program my key:

1. used the key to start the car...then turned it off
2. put the key in the driver door (door closed)
3. pressed the lock button on the key fob once
4. turned the key to lock the door.

This is basically the steps in the owners manual, but the car must be started with the key first, and the key must be in the door lock before pressing the lock button.
