The compressor pulley requires a special puller and installer to service it. These kits cost about $30. Most parts houses carry this tool. Many have a tool rental program for such a tool.

You will have to inquire at your local parts house as to if a belt is offered that is less the AC option. My guess is that your car was never available without this option.

How do I adjust alternator belt?

Check to see if there is a tensioner pully that adjust the belt tightness. The tension pulley a small pulley will have two bolts on it one of them loosens and tightens the belt around the alternator and compressor USUALLY.

The pully on the compressor is bad can i just leave off the compressor and bypass it with a different size belt

Yes. there are basically three ways:

1. Put in a new a/c compressor.

2. Try a smaller serpentine belt. If this model came also w/o a/c, that serpentine belt should work fine. If all Santa Fes came with a/c then like you were saying try a smaller belt. You might have to try different smaller belt sizes(as far as I know) until you really get it right, which is not easy.

3. See if they make an a/c compressor delete pully for your particular model. This is basically just a single standalone pully (dummy pully). Aftermarket companies do not make them for all models, but if they make it for yours, you can use the same serpentine belt w/o a compressor. The internet is the best place to check.

Alternator and water pump belt squeek and often burst

Inncorrect alignment due to past repairs being faulty, wrong belt size, pullies not installed correctly on associated driven units. Have a different mech look at pully alignment and belt, the current mechanic is making the same mistake over and over.
Good luck

Trying to eliminate a/c compressor need size of belt once i remove compressor

Call the auto parts store and tell them you are doing that.
They can look it up on their computor with ac or without ac, and get the right belt.
Some vehilces don't have a listing for no ac and can't be bypassed.

What size serpentine belt do you need to bypass a compressor in a 1993 Cadillac Sedan DeVille? it has a 4.9 liter engine .. and is it possibal

You will need what is called an idle pully and be fitted instead of the compressor the same belt will fit. This is the correct way. An alternative way is to take the bely off the compressor pully and leave it on the other pully's pull it hand tignt holding the excess of the belt in your hand. Now check the belt won't rub on the engine or component's. If the belt has fully cleared all then Release the tensioner all the way and measure the length of belt needed to go around all pully's except the compressor. Take the measurement and the old belt to an autofactor's the old belt is important to have because the dimentions of the belt depth and width are also important. They will be able to check for a belt to suit your need's. Belt dosent need to be the exact length of your measurement 1 to 3 inches longer should be adjustable. cheers

I have a high pitched noise which appears to be coming from front right engine compartment (as you are looking at the engine) which sounds kind of like a belt that is squealing. It is intermittent. Just...

Could be several things. WHICH ENGINE?.. 4 cylinder (has three belts, power steering/water pump, alternator & A/C compressor, one tensioner pully A/C compressor), The V6 2.7 (has only one belt, 1 Idler pully and 1 tensioner pully), the V6 3.5 has two belts - A/C/alternator, and power steering - there are two tensioner pullys). Noises can be caused by the belt(s) themselves, pullys, bearings, pully bearings, water pump shaft bearings (or belts/pullys rubbing up against something). Let's not forget that there is also belt(s) behind the Timing Belt cover as well as pullys and bearings associated with the timing system. You could start by removing one accy drive belt at a time (alternator, water pump, compressor, power steering, etc) to see whether or not the noise goes away in each case. If after each case, you discover the noise is still there, it's probably behind the timing belt cover (idler/tensioner pully, water pump shaft bearing, crankshaft bearing, etc.). Good Luck

Surpentine belt.

depends on which v8 you have....the 4.7 the routing is as follows it goes under the waterpump pully over the alternator down and around the power steering pumpto the crank...it goes under the bottom of the crank to the idler pully.the flat side of the belt goes ver the idler then around the automatic tensioner to the ac compressor.
on the 5.2 and 5.9 it routes starting at the idler pully the flat side goes undr the idler the up to the ac compressor around the compressor and down to the power steering pump ... around power stering pump to waterpump where the flat side is against waterpump pully around water pump down and around crank up it automatic tensioner....around tensioner and up and over alternator

Serpentine belt for 1998 mercury tracer

Hey there MSM,
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator. The routing diagram is on one of the radiator supports.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done
