2004 chevy malibu classic. car cranks but doesn't start, no fuel pump sounds; ether in the breather element didn't start it either. Tried the passlock (anti-theft) reset that didn't work either.
yes there is spark; My 2004 chevy malibu classic with 119,000 worked fine one day and the next didn't want to start. It spins straight whinny sound--no thump thump thump. Serp belt turning the wheels, sprayed ether in breather and nothing. When the key is turned to the on position there is no clicking or fuel pump sounds.yes there is spark; My 2004 chevy malibu classic with 119,000 worked fine one day and the next didn't want to start. By 2004 a large number of vehicles were fitted with an anti-theft system, usually a passive system using a coded key.
If the system isn't disarmed the starter might or might not crank the engine and the fuel pump might or might not send fuel to the engine but the engine will not start.
Your first investigation must be in the vehicle handbook to learn if there is an immobiliser and how you can recognise that it is disarmed.
Once you are certain the system is disarmed you can proceed with the usual checks for a non-starting engine - the presence of fuel and spark, etc.
If your Celebrity is fuel injected or carbureted it will still have an electric fuel pump in the fuel tank. If fuel injected, open the breather and make the breather element wet with gasoline. If carbureted, pour a little gasoline into the venture of the carb then crank the engine. it will start. If it dies once the gas is used up, your fuel pump is not working. Could be a bad pump or a bad connection. check with a test light at the pump connection.
There are four things required for an engine to run: air, fuel, compression and properly timed spark. If you have fuel and timed spark, the only two variables are air and compression. Air is not the likely problem, and compression should be good unless you blew a head gasket or the rings in all four cylinders. How did you determine that you have fuel and spark? Those are the two most likely problem areas.
Make sure it's getting fuel. Try using some ether or starting fluid. If it rumbles to life but doesn't stay running then there's a problem with the fuel delivery system. i.e.... Fuel pump, clogged filter, pressure regulator.... If the ether doesn't change the results you are getting now then it's a fire or sensor problem. Ignition coil, relays, sensors not signaling, PCM... I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out
You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem. Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ? It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, fuel pump, or a list of other things.
TANK HAS TO BE DROPPED FOR NEW FUEL PUMP FILTER INSIDE TANK.CHEAPEST FUEL PUMPS ARE ON EBAY IF YOU CAN WAIT ...OTHER WISE ALMOST 300 AT PARTS STORE.MAYBE 120 OR LESS ON EBAY FOR AFTERMARKET ONE ...FUEL GAUGE SENDING IS ALSO WITH THE PUMP THAT S WHY EXPENSIVE
Hi, you may have it flooded. Try holding the accelerator all the way down while cranking the engine to clear the gas out. Let us know if this doesn't work, and thanks for using FixYa.
Have you changed the fuel filter? Did it die while driving, or just wouldn't start? Don't use starting fluid on a gas engine! It will cause a lot more problems than it solves. Ether, starting fluid is made for diesel engines... not gas, not ever. If it won't start, it isn't lacking ether. It's lacking gas, air or spark.

did you check for spark?
