I own 1994 Acura Integra with a 5 speed manual transmission that recently started to develop a gear whine between shifting 1st to 2nd gears and 3rd gears--less so between 4th and 5th gears. What do you think is the cause? Have I run low on manual transmission fluid? Where is the filler bolt? Thanks, Chester Brezniak

If the whine is there than the main bearing is already worn adding fluid will not save it, you will have to swap it or rebuild it. sorry i know you were hoping for something better.

    to rebuild it with removing and installing will be in range of 13000 dollars but to replace it with a used one about 600 dollars

I had that in my Acura, and it was the transmission low on oil.

    This is a little difficult to do. It helps to remove the front passenger wheel. Look straight in, you'll see tha fill nut near the top of tranny. You can check oil lever here and refill with some kind of hose and funnel arangement.l

Transmision starts out in 1st shifts to 2nd then third but will not shift into overdrive , but once it reaches 3rd gear ,it stays there when you come to a stop . after that it will only shift manually...

Sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

The other from what you described, trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Transmission problem in E230 Benz

What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.

Gear shifting problem

The 1st thing to do is have a test run on the transmission control module to see if any trouble codes are present, next have you ever serviced the transmission, fluid and filter change, should be done at 60,000 miles, on occasion this can cure problems like yours.
