Does your s10 have electronic shift or manual shift? Most i have seen are electronic shift try checking the shift motor on the transfer case, they have a tendency to corrode and split open the case. hope this will you
sounds like it's the motor is going bad or has a bad connection, try cleaning the connector if there isn't any gunk in the connector, check the manual see if there is a ohmn test you can run on the motor, if not i'd replace the motor.
