Engine is leaking antifreeze on the back, driver's side. What's wrong?

I can't fit under the van, it is siting in snow. It is leahing under the engine side of the upper radiator hose. I don't know what that is called.

  • Anonymous Jan 28, 2010

It leaks under the part that the upper hose connects to the engine. It is not where the hose meets, it looks like a gasket or something. I can probably fix it if I knew what iit is called.

It is towards the top right under where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. It is maybe a gasket?

  • Anonymous Jan 28, 2010

How hard is that? Could a do-it-yourselfer handle it?

  • Anonymous Jan 28, 2010

It looks like it's right on top. Dealership said $250, sounds cheap.

Can you tell where exactly the coolant is leaking from the back, driver's side? Are you also having any overheating problems?

I would think a water pump or even a head gasket. A water pump isn't too difficult but it can be depending upon the vehicle. If it's a head gasket though...that's just not a fun or easy job.

And if it's a head gasket that would require taking apart some of the engine and then you would need the torque specs for when you put the new gasket on. Not tightening it properly or in the correct pattern could cause warpage of the head and make the gasket not seal correctly.

Sounds like a water pump, the pump is right there and the most likely thing to leak.

How to check for leaks of antifreeze/in 97 expedition smell of antifreeze

Hi Sharlene,so you smell antifreeze.Raise your hood and check your antifreeze over flow container, you should have a l and a h mark on it,high and low.If low, then it's leaking somewhere, look at the radiator cap and overflow hose for leak, look at over flow container for leak from hose going to it from radiator, look all over engine, look at top and bottom radiator hoses and clamps for leaks,if leaking there, tighten clamp with flat head screw driver,if no leak is found, get under vehicle and see if any antifreeze is visible, maybe water pump, look on ground for leak and follow, check floor board on driver side, heater core could be bad, check hoses going to heater core from engine firewall.

Antifreeze Leak - '99 Chrysler 300M

what you do is go to a radiator specialist shop and have a coolant pressure test done
most probably a cracked top plastic tank
as for the leak at the back , it could be a rusty welsh plug but the pressure test will also show that

Where is the oil sensor?

2.2 liter or 2.4 liter? The 2.4 is on the drivers side of the engine. On top, just back from the p/s pump. On a 2.2 it is on the backside of the engine about dead center. Either way if it is leaking just look for the part that is leaking! Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

I have a antifreeze leak on the driver side. Its back under the engine. It seems like a hose but I cant find a schematic anywhere for antifreeze lines. My reserve tank was completely empty. It is a 2003...

most likely its a core plug on the back of the engine ,once cured only use antifreeze and do not drain it in the summer .Lift bonnet and have a good look and if need be take it to local mechanic to lift on a four poster lift and look from underneath

I have a 1994 Honda accord ex. It is leaking antifreeze

If your antifreeze is leaking into your engine oil, it will destroy the engine quickly. Check the level of both. But...you need to get a pressure gauge on it to apply pressure to the cooling system to see where the coolant is going first. White smoke is a sign of coolant in the engine oil.
