ok now understand post drives find on highway no car model told no engine told. of 3 made,2.4L not told if idle fails hot and cold engines./ my guess is hot only. (because cold runs fast idle) not told, idle fails in all PRNDL gears (of automatic box,if is.) ) fails in drive but not Park or reverse or both. it is misfiring, spark parts new. so EGR stuck open or gross fueling errors at idle.
what is mileage on this car/engine? 500KM? 300,000 miles." ? what is engine RPM at idle failing does engine stall at idle , hot and cold? in PARK ? all I have are questions,. to fix cars we do tests. lots of test with tool, meters and gauges. but 1997 I make sure the EGR valves closed 100% at idle. must. and IAC works, right, Idle air control. injector balance tests. no engine told so no going forward.(specifics)
Being that there are misfire codes, (300 series P codes), and it's flooding I would put a fuel pressure gauge on it and try to check the injectors and the fuel pressure regulator for leakage. If the vehicle has sat for a while, 1 or more of the injectors may have stuck open. If the fuel pressure is way to high it can cause the pressure regulator to leak. See if that helps.
The fact the fuel pressure does not hold after the pump stops is a big problem indicating a fuel leak into the upper manifold, which would cause the flooding. This leak could have several causes, but since the problem is still there after replacing the regulator, it sounds like the problem is with the injector in the spider assembly.
It sounds like you have a design 1 spider assembly, with only one fuel injector distributing fuel to the six poppets. If that is the case, I suggest you try replacing the entire assembly (which will include a new regulator) with the Delco design 2 version which has injectors on each poppet.
If it won't start while cold, it could be the cold start fuel injector is not working or clogged. Check also for a large vacuum leak which could be diluting the fuel mixture. Check for a bad MAP or MAF sensor.
If it won't start hot, look for leaking fuel injectors or an engine coolant temperature sensor disconnected, the wires to it broken, or a faulty sensor. If the engine coolant temp sensor is stuck at full cold (which it would be if disconnected), it will tell the computer the wrong engine temp and the computer will schedule too much fuel for a hot start leading to flooding.
you know ...the only way of kleaning injector is to get-it to a garage and make it whit the pressure machine ...bit expenssive but real good ...no chemical can clean and unblock injector no mather what they say! those product can only keep them clean ...but im from those who bealive that less chemicals in a engine better it-is!
