1996 jeep cherokee sport. HEADLIGHTS, HEADLIGHT KNOB

I have a 1996 jeep cherokee sport. last night i started it up and pulled the headlight knob to turn on the lights, but it would only come half way and turn on the orange parking lights. I tried it a few more times until the knob pulled completely out without turning on anything. Now the nob will go back in, but will not work, or activate any lights inside or outside the car. i tried putting it back in and turning without pulling, but same result. the know is to the point where it just completely slides out without catching anything.
How should i go about fixing this?
Is it able to be fixed by me, or do i need a new knob setup?

thanks.

This happened to me about a month ago. Had to take the dash completely off and replace the switch.

HOW TO TURN THE FOG LIGHTS ON

First you have to turn the headlight switch all the way to the right. This will turn on your headlights. Then pull the switch outward towards you. Your driving lights should be on now. They only work with the headlights on.

Replacing headlight / parklight switch

well i had the same problem and replaced the headlight switch. Once i had done this the headlights would come on but the parking lights and taillights dont work. If you want to try anyway you have to take out the instrument panel and the lower panel. Once you do that there is a release button on the bottom of the switch. Press that and pull the knob out. It took a little jiggling to get mine out. Once the knob is out you will see behind it that there is a screw like thing with a very large flathead slot. take a flathead and unscrew this. once you do the switch will be loose. pull it out and remove wiring harness.

Headlights work but parking lights dont..

if u have change and check the bulbs and fuses. great. fuses do go lose in a cherokee . move each fuse by hand while the lights are on or the switch is in the on position. if you find the problem this way. just take the fuse out and slightly twist the prong of the fuse and replace it back and ditto. make your daughter say " u d grate dad"

96 Jeep Cherokee Headlight

Honestly, I think you have a bad part. It's not uncommon, especially with electrical items. Speak with your parts person and they should warrenty the part. Another switch should cure things.
Good luck.

Head lamp switch removal

if switch is mounted on turn signal lever: remove steering column covers screws are on the bottom of lower cover. once covers are removed you should see mounting screws for the multi-switch(thats what they call headlight/turn signal switch combo). remove screws and connectors & replace switch w/new and reverse procedure.

Headlights

You could have 2 bad headlight bulbs.
You have to check the fuses for your dash lights.
