97 mazda protege wont start when its cold.

It wont start unless you crank it for several minutes. It pumps so much gas into the motor that it leaks out of the catalitic converter under the car if you hold the pedel down it will act like it wants to start and finaly after 5 to 10 minutes of solid cranking off and on the gas peddel it will start and run like it is brand new? It will start fine then all day unless it sets for more than 6 hours then you have to go through it all again. I have it in the garage scan tool says the maf senser was bad changed it and ran all the test on the wiring still same problem.Did all of the tune up stuff plugs wires cap rotor pcv valve i am at a loss and have no clue.
Is it possible that the PCM is bad needs replaced or re flashed? I just find it strange that once started it run and starts like it should. It has spark and fuel when you try to start it for the first time.

Hard starting when cold indicates that the ambient temp sensor , baro sensor,MAP sensor individually or separately are part of the problem
when a code is reported there can be up to 7 causes for that code and not just the one
if you can find what the code reported was maybe some one can expand and get you more pointers
it is doubtful if you have a problem pcm or ECM or any other operating control unit because it starts eventually and runs so that indicates a problem sensor

SOURCE: 97 mazda protoge will not start when cold!

I had this same problem with my 97 protege. If the compression is low the shims for the valves can be changed without doing a complete valve job. If the compression is OK you might need to replace the distributor. Sometimes the seal behind it leaks and can cause the same problem

My 96 Mazda protege starts but won't stay running unless I press the gas pedal and it's really cold outside

Clean the throttle body, IAC motor and replace the air filter. This will help.

Cold start problem mazda 2001

Could be the fuel pump relay, or a faulty pump, or pressure regulator.
The fuel system is supposed to hold pressure after you turn the engine off. A faulty pump or pressure regulator could allow fuel to drain back into the tank overnight. You would need to crank the engine for several seconds to build pressure back up.
The relay could be faulty and not giving the fuel pump power until the oil pressure comes up.

Cranks over fine but wont start in cold unless plugged in for at least 20 minutes. It used to when I first got it.

You need a very good tune up, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, even a new coil would be good.

not to mention gas and air filtre

gas line antifreeze in your gas tank would help a lot too.

1994 mazda protege 1.8 l auto trans won't start

It could be a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It sounds like when it is cold, your computer is interpreting your signal from the ECT (or lack therof) as being at a certain temperature and not providing the right amount of fuel in order to start the engine when it is cold. Does the check engine light blink or flash at all?
