YOU HAVE TO REMOVE VALVE COVERS LOOSEN REMOVE ROCKER ARMS ASSEMBLY KEEP ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY IN ORDER SO THEY GO BACK IN THE ORIGINAL POSITION.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD ALSO.YOU NEED A REPAIR MANUAL FOR TORQUE SEQUENCE ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND ROCKER ARMS TORQUE.
99 chevy malibu v6 3.1 engine, head bolt torque is-- 98 through 2001 is step1- 37 foot lbs, step 2- rotate an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn). the rocker arm bolts are 168-in. lbs.
You should only have to remove the rocker assembly, the head bolts ussually hold the assembly on,but even if you remove them the head gasket will stay sealed. You'll have to get the torque specs and bolt down sequence, and check to see if its recomended to replace the head bolts. When you dissassemble the rocker assembly lay the parts out in sequece and reassemble in the correct order.Hope this helps.
