Replace faulty oil pressure sender.
Oil pressure sender is usually on the engine block, screwed into a fitting accessing the motor oil distribution gallery.

SOURCE: Pontiac Bonneville(2000) oil pressure sending unit

The oil pressure sending unit is located behind the oil filter, Threaded into an aluminunm housing. It has wiring that plugs into the sending unit. The oil filter has to be removed and you will need a deep well socket and a 6 inch extension. Change the oil and the sending unit together.

I have lost about 3 quarts of oil and its not coming from the filter or the oil pan could it be the oil sending unit and where is it located

Yes it is very possible to leak oil from the sending unit. there is several locations depending on the engine size. Leaking as much as you are it should not be hard to find it.

Oil leak only when van is running and appears above the starter . Down 3 liters in 1 1/2 days.

It common for the oil to leak there when your oil pressure sending unit has gone bad. It's a simple fix, locate the oil pressure sending unit (between the starter and oil filter are) and replace. Auto Zone will have the part you need and step by step instructions to get the job done, Napa, and Part Source will have the part also. Do not use Teflon tape when installing the new oil pressure sending unit, the end is tapered and it needs a good ground to the engine block to work properly.

Good luck and this should take you around 20 min to replace once your start when the engine has cooled off to work on.
