easiest way to change a timing belt is to
first slightly slacken off the belt tensioner
carefully cut the old belt in half along its entire length while it is still on the engine.
remove the outer half only.
place the new belt on the pulleys up against the inner half of the old belt.
cut and remove the inner half of the old belt.
push the new belt fully into place.
re tension the belt as specified.

Keep doing regular oil changes , fuel and air filters if they havn't been done for a while. Timing belt every 100,000 km.
Everything else only as needed . Brakes , shocks , exhaust , etc.

corollas have cam belts,about 80,000 km is recommended.if its done more than that,and you havent had it done,get it done soon.

From the little information you have given me i would quess that the brushes inside your starter are going bad you may have someone check your starter!!

1998-2008 Corolla has a timing chain. So, your 2001 Corolla does not require a timing belt change, since it does not have one. There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. your chain will run over 200000 miles or longer.
