I know this post is old, but just incase anyone else has the above problem, in my case (Kia Mentor '98) I had to replace the distributor cap. Hesitation was due to a 'carbon track' that had developed. Easy to check for this, Google and YouTube videos are very helpful. Highly recommend giving it a go before investing effort (and money!) into other possibilities.

If your engine tends to idle rough it is probably a sensor. Mine would idle rough and disturb my mass airflow sensor located on top of engine. It may also be a knock sensor from engine knocking.

I have a 1997 Fiesta auto, runs fine apart from a slight gearbox issue. When starting from cold and selecting Drive the car will sit there for upto 5 seconds before moving away and will stall if the brakes...

I would be looking for a vacumn hose leaking. The cold engine needs a rich mixture and braking uses the vacumn booster causing the mixure to lean. A warm engine races with the extra air.

Rpm's fluctuate at idle

The oil pressure quage is moving around because the engine is slowing down and speeding up. As far as the idle surging goes try this.

2001 Taurus started chugging & wanted to stall while waiting at a stop light. Car did not have good power so we parked it. It popped no codes. Now the only way to keep it running is to constantly pedal...

get a friend with a hacksaw and a welder to chop it off and put a piece of straightpipe on it. it'll be fine. but first, unplug the mass air flow sensor and/ or the manifold absolute pressure sensor and see if they are fouled out first. check all sensors first.

When coming to a stop the motor shuts down. to take off again you have to put it in neutral to restart. it then takes 2 or more tries to keep it going once you shift to drive.

SOUND LIKE FAULTY TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID.WHAT HAPPENING WHEN YOU COME TO A STOP.WHEN YOUR FOOT PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL THE TRANSMISSION TORQUE CLUTCH SOLENOID SUPPOSE TO UNLOCK TORQUE CONVERTER TO KEEP FROM STALLING THE ENGINE IF NOT THATS WHAT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL OUT.SO HAVE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH CHECK OUT AND HAVE THE TRANSMISSION SCANNED FOR A TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID FAULT.

Engine lagging power on take off as well as stalling at lights

Ignition Coil is faulty. To be certain next time you are stationary after driving put the vehicle into neutral and keep reving softly so as to keep power going to the coil. If the car does not stall upon take off, have it replaced and you should be ok. Cheap and easy job to replace.

2000 pont. grand am dies at stops and low idle

I just got done with this same problem. Check a small looped vacuum hose just behind the mass air flow sensor which is attached to the air filter housing. the hose will be toward the plenom on the right side next to a blue connector. They have a tendency of getting soft.
